Publisher's summary

Richard Sharpe avoids the tyrannical Sergeant Obadiah Hakeswill and endeavours to rescue a British officer from under the nose of the Tippoo of Mysore.

But in fleeing Hakeswill, Sharpe enters the exotic and dangerous world of the Tippoo. An adventure that will require all of his wits just to stay alive, let alone save the British army from catastrophe.

Soldier, hero, rogue - Sharpe is the man you always want on your side. Born in poverty, he joined the army to escape jail and climbed the ranks by sheer brutal courage. He knows no other family than the regiment of the 95th Rifles whose green jacket he proudly wears.

"The best battle scenes of any writer I've ever read, past or present. Cornwell really makes history come alive." ( George R.R. Martin)

A great story and a great read.

Bernard Cornwell weaves historical fact and entertaining fiction into a compelling story. One cannot help but admire Richard Sharp’s ruthlessness and kindness.
It is Rupert Farley who brings this great story to life. His ability to give voice to the variety of characters makes this a great listen.

Tipu sultan

His father haider Ali always kept the British at distance and as long as he was alive Mysore was safe
Tipu was a great ruler and was the first ruler who wanted to kick the bristhers out of India.he tried a treaty with Hyderabad but the red coats pulled Hyderabad on their side and attacked tipu.this is the way of dived and rule and that is how Britain ruled India for nearly 200 years

A romp

Good fun if a completely preposterous plot! Nicely read. Sharpe survives more close shaves than James Bond.

Great start to the series!

I found this book wonderful. Being immersed in a history and part of the world that I have little knowledge of. Bernard Cornwell has a way of writing that involves all your senses, you feel and hear and smell and even taste the story. I thoroughly enjoyed this action filled historical novel.

Fantastic Narration

I listened to the abridged version with Sean Bean, and yet this narration was somehow better?
