Publisher's summary

To know the Sweet Potato Queens is to love them, and if you haven't heard about them yet, you will. Since the early 1980s, this group of belles gone bad has been the toast of Jackson, Mississippi, with their glorious annual appearance in the St. Patrick's Day parade. In The Sweet Potato Queens' Book of Love, their royal ringleader, Jill Conner Browne, introduces the Queens to the world with this sly, hilarious manifesto about love, life, men, and the importance of being prepared. Topics include:

  • The True Magic Words Guaranteed to Get Any Man to Do Your Bidding
  • The Five Men You Must Have in Your Life at All Times
  • Men Who May Need Killing, Quite Frankly
  • What to Eat When Tragedy Strikes, or Just for Entertainment

And, of course:

  • The Best Advice Ever Given in the Entire History of the World

From tales of the infamous Sweet Potato Queens' Promise to the joys of Chocolate Stuff and Fat Mama's Knock You Naked Margaritas, this irreverent, shamelessly funny book is the gen-u-wine article.

A couple of giggles...

But mostly shocked! It didn't flow well...just a series of experiences that do not seem to relate to one another. Book of love was rather a book of obsessive self love.

SPQ hilarious

This is one of the best "reads" in the humor division I have heard. Jill's reading of her own work lends another dimension to the humor.
Well written in a conversational style that would make Shakespeare proud, Jill has captured the humor of everday happenings.
This is a gotta' have book.

better written, but still fun

Would you consider the audio edition of The Sweet Potato Queens' Book of Love to be better than the print version?

No, but this is the first of the series. By the latest (fat is new 30), JCB has honed the craft. If you like and enjoy the written exploits of the tammys, you'll still like the audio, but I would have liked it less if I fight already have a mental image of the big booties and big hairs in mind from reading

What did you like best about this story?

JCB isn't afraid to just tell it how it isn't. She exaggerates in the great, just too much over the top way that Dave Barry and Steve Martin do,just enough to over come the anxiety that makes something "offensive" and makes it downright ludicrous and there fore revealing. Ex. The big butt and boob costumes that weigh in at 40 lbs each or the food groups of fat, fried, salty, and an gratin.

What three words best describe Jill Conner Browne’s performance?

Southern beauty queen

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

She has more of these in fat is the new 30 where she takes care of her dying mom. Never have I read before someone who tells that as it is- a process that goes on for longer than you want, can be downright ordinary, and even funny, but also really stresses the soul.

Any additional comments?

JCB and dave Barry should spend a week in upstate Florida writing . I'd kill for that kind of backwoods southern humor.

One of the Best Ever

Any woman over the age of 30 will love this book! It is funny, informative and will become one of your favorites. I never listen to a book more than once, but I replay all my SPQ books over and over. It's like getting together with your best friend over a pitcher of margariatas!!

every word uttered will make you guffaw, blush or start your own group of beauty queens in your town. this is not a shallow book of humor. it is a deep psychological self help book with recipes

Young Woman finds hope in Jill's Wisdom

I thought I was too juvenile for Jill's book, but it makes me want to age with the same grace, humility, and humor that Jill has accepted. I particularly identified with her 5 men you need in your life. #FeelGood
