Show Up and Let Yourself be Seen
Is vulnerability the same as weakness? “In our culture,” teaches Dr. Brené Brown, “we associate vulnerability with emotions we want to avoid such as fear, shame, and uncertainty. Yet we too often lose sight of the fact that vulnerability is also the birthplace of joy, belonging, creativity, authenticity, and love.” On The Power of Vulnerability, Dr. Brown offers an invitation and a promise - that when we dare to drop the armor that protects us from feeling vulnerable, we open ourselves to the experiences that bring purpose and meaning to our lives. Here she dispels the cultural myth that vulnerability is weakness and reveals that it is, in truth, our most accurate measure of courage.
“The Power of Vulnerability is a very personal project for me,” Brené explains. “This is the first place that all of my work comes together. This audio course draws from all three of my books - it’s the culmination of everything I’ve learned over the past twelve years. I'm very excited to weave it all into a truly comprehensive form that shows what these findings and insights can mean in our lives.”
Guidance and Insights for Wholehearted Living
Over the past twelve years, Dr. Brené Brown has interviewed hundreds of people as part of an ongoing study of vulnerability. “The research shows that we try to ward disappointment with a shield of cynicism, disarm shame by numbing ourselves against joy, and circumvent grief by shutting off our willingness to love,” explains Dr. Brown. When we become aware of these patterns, she teaches, we begin to become conscious of how much we sacrifice in the name of self-defense -and how much richer our lives become when we open ourselves to vulnerability.
“In my research,” Dr. Brown says, “the word I use to describe people who can live from a place of vulnerability is wholehearted.” Being wholehearted is a practice—one that we can choose to cultivate through empathy, gratitude, and awareness of our vulnerability armor. Join this engaging and heartfelt teacher on The Power of Vulnerability as she offers profound insights on leaning into the full spectrum of emotions—so we can show up, let ourselves be seen, and truly be all in.

I loved this talk. I have listened to, "The Gifts of Imperfection," "Daring Greatly," and her 2 hour talk on parenting. I think this talk is the best overall. If you only buy one of her downloads, I would buy this one. She covers all the topics in the other books. The format is great, Brene is a brilliant speaker. When you listen, it sounds like she is talking to you personally, not to a room full of people. (You can hear people laugh and clap, but the audio is recorded well and it is not annoying.) A great listen! One I will refer to many times when I need some guidance and an extra boost of confidence. Thanks Brene!
This audio book is a powerful live event, that encompasses Brene's entire volume of work. It captures her warmth, personality, and mastery of the subjects presented through touching stories and relevant humor. If you enjoyed her TED Talks, you'll LOVE this audio! It will change your perspective, your relationships, and your life! You will learn about yourself, and LOL in the process! I can't recommend this enough!! Get it! You won't regret it!
Wild at Heart Hater
Brene Brown is a fantastic speaker. She conveys her information in a way that is easily digestible while still being entertaining. It is clear she is passionate about her work. Even though this was a speech/workshop, I felt like she was aware that I was part of her listening audience even if I wasn't present.
The last two hours where she talked about wholehearted living were particularly useful. She gave examples of how to create a more wholehearted life.
I loved this speech/workshop because Brene Brown talked about what all of her research since 2001 has revealed and what we can learn from it. She is a fantastic speaker. The information and her delivery of it was so gripping I didn't want to stop listening.
Comforting, Insightful, Fun
I haven't. I wish she were the narrator of all her audiobooks. I want to buy more of them, but I'm afraid to be disappointed!
Two things really struck me. The first was her assertion that we don't call shame "shame," and people want to avoid the subject. The second was her description of perfectionism as a "20-ton shield" we carry.
I don't think reading this in print would even compare to the listening experience. I'd hear it in my own voice - and this message is something that I needed to be "told."
Brené Brown is fantastic! I loved her TED talk from a while back, and heard she had published a book (Daring Greatly) and found this when I looked for the book. I opted for this over the book because Brené is SUCH an engaging story teller, and from the snippet of Daring Greatly, it sounded like Siri was doing the narrating. This did not disappoint--AT ALL. She is witty, smart and so honest (even when the honesty isn't so pretty, like the cookie story). She has a way of making all of this seem so logical, and making us feel like we are all in it together. Sure, it's a little self-helpy, but in a really intellectual way, not in a preachy hand-holding new-agey way. I have recommended this to lots of friends. If you get nothing else out of it, at least you will enjoy Brené's hilarious stories. I will likely read Daring Greatly at some point, versus going the audiobook route, since I'd like to hear her energy and enthusiasm in my head when I read it.
Educator of Young Children. Enjoy non-fiction and research based books on child development, developmental psychology.
This is my first Audible experience with Dr. Brown. Right from the start she captures your attention. She draws you in as if you were attending her seminar using humor, authentic stories, along with clear explanations of her research. Her explanation of "shame" and the control it has over our lives was a revelation beyond measure. I will add her other books to my collection. She is amazing and connects with her audience powerfully!
This book as Brene Brown's other book has help me understand why things come to my mind as they do. Being a man that's not wired to think about feelings and not even talk about them! This with her other books has realy help me to take and not be afraid to say how I feel about what ever. Thanks so much to Brene Brown for your work! and please don't stop looking and doing what you love.
This was a live lecture. It had interaction with the audience and it didn't sound like it was just reading off facts
She was funny, insightful and really authentic in her communication style
Brene Brown explains vulnerability and demonstrates how vulnerability manifests in people. Then, she shares tools you can use NOW on how to grow and work with it instead of fighting it.
The tools shared are now in use with my daily living. Even deploying one tool at work has given me insight of how I was allowing others to affect me - demonstrating what's acceptable and what is not.
Brene Brown comes across as "just one of us" and we are all in this boat together. It doesn't matter your economic status, family status, or anything else. Her stories were true and genuine - authentic! We are all human. I loved this about her presentation and demeanor. Most importantly, there was no condescension, just uplifting messages. Thank you!
Yes and No. I think taking the book in chunks is better. This allows you to reflect on the message. AND, it was so good, I could sit one day and just listen. This is definitely in my replay library.
Thank you for this opportunity to listen to your messages and how to work with vulnerability in life. There were a lot of "aha" moments - and they say awareness is 90% of the journey. Thank you for sharing some tips and messages to help with the other 10% of the journey.
The truth and realness of uncovering vulnerability. One of the best teachings I have heard. Delivered with facts, research, humor, love and vulnerability.
It will make you take a deep look into areas of your life with a new perspective. You will laugh and cry.
I would recommend this for everyone. It is enlightening, refreshing, and healing.
Authentic, compelling, powerful
Any of Brené's personal anecdotes where she stands clearly in her own humanity - coffee crashing at home, fending off slimy busybodies in car pool line... There are many stories and all illustrate and enrich the concepts being drawn from her academic research.
I've watched the TED talks and some of an RSA talk, I'm reading the book 'Daring Greatly', but this audio is the best of all of it. Occasionally something gets lost because the listener can't see the gestures or facial expressions, but this is a minor disadvantage.
Several - mostly the personal anecdotes that bring the ideas to life.
Brene is so engaging. I laughed and cried like a mad woman in my car listening to this. She is so on point that i dont think anyone would struggle to find something to take away from this talk
"One of the best books I've read in a long time"
Brene Brown is a shame researcher. She recounts through her research on shame how that impacted her own life, or rather how the data she discovered hijacked her and brought her through a year of soul searching. The areas she covers are shame, wholeheartedness and of course vulnerability.
This is not a dry academic book that contains boring data and statistics, rather Brene reveals through the
Data and the areas I've mentioned above how those areas influence our lives and the lives of others.
She explains well how vulnerability is misunderstood and unpacks what can be good and bad about it, but above all why it's necessary.
As this was the audible version it was a series of talks she did. She speaks on tricky subjects with humour, compassion, sensitivity and honesty. She was not afraid to be open about her own experiences. She comes up with some great definitions too.
I loved this book because it was so unique, refreshing and above all resonates truth.
Finally you can't read this book without it touching you personally.
"Powerful and empowering"
Thought provoking, full of humanity and real truths about the human condition. Thank you Brene Browne. Lots to work on!
"A must listen in your journey"
She has great style talking about her subject and is an engaging narrator. It's not a heavy read but very thought provoking as I found myself stopping and observing the topics in my daily life. It is changing my approach to parenting and to my self feelings. I am also inspired and find it easy to follow an understand. I will listen to this again and again
"Life-enhancing. Thank you."
I love this book, it's wonderfully insightful and sometimes painfully true.I felt a much greater affinity with this book than with some of Brene's other work because I am not a facts and figures type of gal. This book, whilst still based on Brene's qualitative research, also contains lots of human stories which resonated with me. I love the way Brene herself was so courageously vulnerable in it.
Absolutely love it. Love the information. Love the style. Absolutely brilliant. Its inspired me to buy more of your books and listen to them. Acting goofy right now on a park swing with ice cream in my hand. Thanks. :)
"listened to it twice so far"
and I Look forward to listening to it again. A lot of laughter makes the subject very approachable. everyone should listen to this.
"Eye opener to a new concept"
Brene's sense of humour , tone of voice made the topic joyful
Worth listening too ..
She introduced concept of " shame" which was once overlooked .. All of a sudden I realised how many times I bit my fingers over things that are silly and purely to please others.. All in all , good listen
100% over and over again.
I have listened to all the TED talks and I was hesitant about listening to this because I thought it would contain the same material, however, this by far outweighs all the others! I love the way she delivers an important moral message using anecdotes that will have you laughing out loud, literally!
This is the best of them all.
no, I wanted it to last a week, but I did it in three days.
If you listen there will be some laughter and maybe some tears, all whilst helping you become the best you. Takes notes, it's sooooo worth it!!!
