A Must for Marriage Before, During, or After

Dr. Gary Chapman's approach and voice on marriage, his examination of the core values toward marriage, and the easy-going spirit of his counsel and advice on whole really make it simple for both men and women to grasp and take hold of key ideas that are crucial to making marriage, the most important relationship you might ever have in life, happy, successful, and mutually rewarding. Although this is largely based on Christian views and references much of the Bible's teachings on the subject, it is very practicle and the principles can be understood by all.

I've now passed this book on to my wife & both sets of parents and include his "Five Love Languages" book along with it... both books should be manditory reading for couples in all stages even if not married. If you've ever had troubles, concerns, doubts, questions, or just curiosity on this subject GET THIS BOOK! Life is way too short to not pickup this diamond of knowledge and key learning.

Annoying Voice, Annoying Accent, Annoying Terms

Don't waste your time. I loved Chapmans book The Five Love Languages. Great book, but this is a disaster. So many Christian references that it makes someone Non-Christian vomit a little bit. Why base this book on the Bible and put it in the relationship section? Keep in the Christian isle, and we'll all be happy. I had to stop listening to this book for weeks at a time before I could get through the whole thing. His "God Talk" started to make me sick. That, and voice. He sounds like an overweight man walking and talking. A little out of breath, a little like he's swollowing something at the end of every sentance, and just overall too Southern for my taste. It makes me crave BBQ every time I listen to him.

In conclusion, for the Non-Bible Thumpers out there, don't bother with this book. It's a waste of time and money.

    A Primer for godly marriage

What did you love best about The Marriage You've Always Wanted?

It really brought together the biblical concept of marriage in a user-friendly format. A must-read before the walk to the altar!

What did you like best about this story?

Dr. Chapman defines unity, accountability and equality within the context of marriage. He supports these concepts with scriptural references and delivers the message with remarkable clarity. If you aren't 'convicted' at some point during this book, then you aren't really married!

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The personal anecdotes were amusing and helpful (I especially liked the one about the "drawer-opener").

    Any additional comments?

It's impossible to do the homework assignments while sailing along @ 70 mph, so you'll probably end up buying the book like I did.

    Boring

I really wanted to like this book as I loved the 5 love languages and the 5 love languages for children but allthe will in the world couldn't make this interesting. I did not get through the whole reading so maybe it got better but I never found out.

The advice in this book is fantastic!

Dr. Chapman has a way of presenting information so it is easy to understand and based in reality. He has helped hundreds of people save and improve their marriages. I wish I had read it 10 years ago.

    Basic Common Sense

The information and recommendations provided in this text are basic and necessary. I would recommend the book for newlyweds. I felt that it lacked true depth and failed to address how a Christian struggling in a situation where the advice provided has been executed, but has not yielded any positive results. Most of the examples seem trivial and laughable (becoming angered about a spouse leaving drawers open, making additional demands on a spouse after he/she has performed a task, being snappy with each other, etc...) but fails to address serious issues in a marriage and advice for those of us who have been introspective, self-condemning and consistently trying to check their behavior but who feel trapped in a marriage that is not enjoyable, but to be endured.
Use this book if you have basic issues, but anything that needs more in-depth work, this book felt like being handed a band-aid as a fix for a hemorrhaging wound.

    Not for a non-Christian

Not for me. I did not expect there to be as much religious reference as there was.
May work well and resonate with others who are Christians though.

    Great book

I have already listened to this book twice and I am about to listen again. I also ordered the book and I have read it as well. It has so much to offer a marriage. I also got my husband to listen to it and we are going to use the written book to complete the suggested assignments at the end of each chapter. It has already begun to improve my marriage just by listening. Dr. Chapman's books offer the Christian an excellent resource for a better more Christ filled & happy life.

Not a very modern take on marriage

There were some aspects of this book that was helpful, but I feel that the roles and ideals of a more modern marriage were not addressed.
