Publisher's summary

The Lakota Way received the prestigious Audie Award, considered the "Oscar" award of the audiobook industry, in 2004 for the category of best inspirational audio.

The myth of Deer Woman teaches a lesson on respect. The legend of Crazy Horse illuminates a lesson on humility. And the story of Eagle brings home the importance of compassion. These stories from the heart of Lakota culture and its survival, and their meanings, still resonate deeply with our daily lives.

Rich with storytelling, history, folklore, and Marshall's own personal experiences, The Lakota Way expresses the heart of Native American philosophy and the 12 core qualities that are crucial to the Lakota way of living: bravery, fortitude, generosity, wisdom, respect, honor, perseverance, love, humility, sacrifice, truth, and compassion.

Compelling and profound, The Lakota Way gives a fresh outlook to those searching for a new perspective on spiritual and ethical living.

Enjoyed this very much.

Not only did I learn about the Lakota, but I learned through the stories what I can work on internally myself. Really well done

Can't stop listening

This is such a great book and the author is a wonderful story teller. I look forward to every chapter and I am so drawn to his stories. This is a book with lessons for all of mankind, especially in the times we live in today. I look forward to Mr Marshall's other books.

Excellent glimpse into Lakota spiritual beliefs

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would highly recommend this book as inspiration for morality teaching - to your kids or yourself. The Lakota's ancient moral compass was passed down through generational stories that allow the listener to loose themselves into a simpler time. I love that the author is the narrator. Marshall's pleasant voice expresses his personal feelings.

What does Joseph M. Marshall bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Being the author and the person to experience these stories first hand, Mr Marshall is able to inject his deep feelings and emphasize the important details better than a simple reader.

What’s an idea from the book that you will remember?

Each morality story covers a basic social virtue like generosity, courage, truthfulness. These stories apply to everyone, not just Lakota people. They left me with a profound humility in the depth of spiritual guidance that the early American Indian tried lived up to.

Great story, Audio needs work

Terrific read full of life lessons that many of us could benefit from. I strongly encourage you to give it a listen. Only issues I have are a hard time with the audio. The reading was recorded in too many different rooms at different times and different levels.

beautiful stories and teachings.

the wisdom and morals of a beautiful culture and the infuriating injustices that have and still are handed to the people who truly belong on this land.

A book to read to our children

Some say that authors should not read their own books but I cannot think of anyone better suited to read a book by Joseph Marshall than the author. These are incredible stories that have come down through an oral tradition so how better to enjoy them than to listen. My first contact with Joseph Marshall was by way of his book on Crazy Horse; a very hard act to follow, I thought. Well, I could not more strongly recommend a book.

If anyone has any desire to learn about the heart and soul of our bother and sister Native Americans and what they have to teach all of us, this is a book to read.

very authentic feel

The narration brought an authentic feel to the stories and the lessons as perceived by a lakota himself, told by a lakota. Beautiful wisdom.
