Publisher's Summary

Everyone wants to be happy. But what does that really mean? Increasingly, scientific evidence shows us that true satisfaction and well-being come only from within.

Dr. Andrew Weil has proven that the best way to maintain optimum physical health is to draw on both conventional and alternative medicine. Now, in Spontaneous Happiness, he gives us the foundation for attaining and sustaining optimum emotional health. Rooted in Dr. Weil's pioneering work in integrative medicine, the book suggests a reinterpretation of the notion of happiness, discusses the limitations of the biomedical model in treating depression, and elaborates on the inseparability of body and mind.

Dr. Weil offers an array of scientifically proven strategies from Eastern and Western psychology to counteract low mood and enhance contentment, comfort, resilience, serenity, and emotional balance. Drawn from psychotherapy, mindfulness training, Buddhist psychology, nutritional science, and more, these strategies include body-oriented therapies to support emotional wellness, techniques for managing stress and anxiety and changing mental habits that keep us stuck in negative patterns, and advice on developing a spiritual dimension in our lives. Lastly, Dr. Weil presents an eight-week program that can be customized according to specific needs, with short- and long-term advice on nutrition, exercise, supplements, environment, lifestyle, and much more.

Whether you are struggling with depression or simply want to feel happier, Dr. Weil's revolutionary approach will shift the paradigm of emotional health and help you achieve greater contentment in life.

What the Critics Say

"Weil's program aims for 'positive emotionality' - a far better destination than the roller-coaster ride between bliss and despair. This is more than a New Age prescription for contentment. Weil's revelations and insights from his own lifelong battle with depression lift this guide from a hip and clinical 'how to' to a generous and heartfelt 'here's how.'" (Publisher's Weekly)

"Best book for those with depression"
What made the experience of listening to Spontaneous Happiness the most enjoyable?

Dr. Weil has a great voice, if he wasn't a doctor he could have been an announcer.

What other book might you compare Spontaneous Happiness to and why?

Everytime I read a fantasticaly helpful, useful book like this I run out and buy the paper book so I can pass it on to a friend. This one I also bought the Kindle version. This is the best book for those who are or have been suffering with depression.

I would also recommend Healthy Aging which is just as good but needs a snappier title.

    "Understand and overcome your depression"

My Therapist recommended Spontaneous Happiness. Through understanding negative thought patterns and "rumination", I've been able to pull myself out of a deep dark hole and move forward after a divorce and relocation. I never understood how powerful negative thought is. I now know I'm not as insane as I imagined, and have the ability to beat this.

    "Liked it, didn't love it."
Would you try another book from Andrew Weil and/or Andrew Weil?

I have read other books by Andrew Weil, and while I like his message, he does tend to say the same things. I might read another book by him if it looked particularly intriguing.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

The most interesting aspect was Dr. Weil's own experiences with depression. He made it seem real and that he understood. The least interesting was some of the same things he had repeated in other books.

What does Andrew Weil bring to the story that you wouldn???t experience if you just read the book?

He has a great voice for narration.

Was Spontaneous Happiness worth the listening time?

    Yes, it was.

"Very informative -if you can stay awake listening"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, it has amazing information in it. It is very dry so I can not listen in the car, instead I listen when lying down and it leads to sleeping. That said, it is the type of book you listen to over and over by section and it is helpful that he announces what the chapters are about and refers back to them.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Spontaneous Happiness?

Chapter 10 helps you put it all together.

What three words best describe Andrew Weil’s performance?

    Informative Gentle Bibliographic

What’s an idea from the book that you will remember?

The concept that you can monitor your mental intake the way you monitor your food

    Any additional comments?

NO NEED FOR BIBLIOGRAPHIC REFERENCES WHEN LISTENING TO A BOOK. ONE MENTION IN THE BEGINNING THAT ALL REFERENCES AND FOOTNOTES ARE IN PDF ... people tend to listen while relaxing or otherwise engaged, this sound recording sounds more like a classroom lecture where one is expected to have a pen and paper. Maybe they are and that is why I have to listen over and over?
