Finally, an audiobook that goes beyond the how-tos of cleaning and looks right at the heart of messiness so permanent change can take place. You'll learn why things are out of control so you can get them back in order and keep them that way. You'll uncover the mental and emotional roots of clutter - guilt, fear, rebellion, habit - so you can get rid of it. Even the best cleaning methods are useless if you can't keep up and soon slip back into old habits. Stop struggling. You can overcome that old, unsuccessful mind-set and discover a new way of thinking that makes messiness a thing of the past.

I was hoping this audio book may give me some good tips on organization. Wrong. I not only had the Bible preached to me but there was a suggestion that disorganization in the house 'may have my husband threatening to leave, or maybe had already left.' I'd like to know if the husband referred to had a piano tied to his butt because he wasn't able to help, or heaven forbid, maybe the almighty lord and master of the house was part of the problem? I gave the book two stars because the choice of narrator was good. In my opinion, this is a poor excuse for a self help book.
This book is VERY disappointing. The description on audible.com does not capture the nature of this book.
Focus is on "woman's job" to maintain a clean organized household. This book is not about organizing for life. Life is much more than keeping a home. "An organized house is closely tied to womanhood". Attitudes in book are from the 1950's.
Plus, bible verses and regressive preaching are not appropriate for this type of book. Especially, since they were not mentioned in the description. The author suggests that every good "Christian" woman should have a clean and orderly house to keep her husband satisfied. This is closed and archaic view of being a Christian woman of the 20th century.
I would not recommend this book for any reader. Wish I could give it zero stars.
I am a horrible book reader but audible has changed my life. I now feel like I have access to what the "smart people" know. I also have a new level of confidence based on my new knowledge.
To be fair, I didn't make it past the first several chapters. I tried to stay with it but I believe that the writer was referring to the reader as a "Messy" (i.e.,"Messies have problems throwing things away"). I tried not to let it bother me but the style of writing made me feel like I was a '50's housewife who barely graduated from kindergarten. I also got the feeling that part of the problem that "Messies" suffered from was OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder) associated with "hoarding" but the book didn't refer to the actual psychological classification. The author seemed to lump every potential pattern of a "messy" without actually identifying the psychological condition. In general, seemed like the author may have missed the time period when mixing pseudo-science and condescending grade school teaching passed for helping people. I truly couldn't stomach wasting more time with this nonsense. My apologies if the book somehow improved after chapter 2.
I need to screen reading material better. I am glad I didn't waste more time on this book.
Quality of Audible app is excellent; however, book is less than good
Made me feel like I was sitting in kindergarten class being read to out of a book that had 10 words per page and a lot of pictures.
I saw the book at the airport book store under "best sellers" which I am assuming was used to sucker people into buying it. Shame on me for not reading the other reviews.
This is great for anyone that wants to understand WHY they are a messie and what to do to get started on a road to a happier, peaceful life without the Chaos. If you have tried traditional organizing books and the systems don't work for you, go deeper and listen to this one before trying again. Quick, easy listen, you can't go wrong!
My favorite part is her explanation of the possible causes of my disorganization. I thought the things around me was the only thing wrong with my messy life... I was wrong after listening to this audio. I learned to approach cleaning differently and started making improvements. Thank you.
Definitely, it's a psychology book for messy people that will give you insight of why they live the way they do.
i can see myself in this story in so many ways.
Being read the story instead of reading it myself, i can do other things while listening.
why I am a messie.
and now I'm going to clean my house.
I enjoyed this very much. One of the books I will listen to again and again.
It made sense. Practical and down to earth.
Oh, she's great! She has a happy bounce to her voice that I find likable and enjoyable.
I hope to organize and stay that way and not feel bad throwing all that stuff out that others insist I keep. I seem to be the family storage unit! NOT ANYMORE!
I would have liked to be warned that this was Christian based. Throwing the bible verses in there without warning was inconsiderate and insulting to other peoples spirituality. If I wanted to listen to bible verses I would have bought a book on that subject. Other than that, this book is worth listening to.
I enjoyed this book. It brought out some simple but profound truths about those of us who are "born messie". Felton has a compassionate understanding of so many of the aspects of our problem with organizing our lives and our houses. My only bone to pick is that this audio is not unabridged... several times whole lines or paragraphs were left out. I noticed because I like to do "emersion reading" where you look at the book as the audio reads it. If a book is advertised as "unabridged" then the entire book should be present. Otherwise I would have given it the other star. It is a simple read, but a compassionate one with an understanding which can only come from someone who's been there.
Not unabridged as advertised... paragraphs and sentences were missing from the book.
"brilliant psychology on clutter"
Sandra really gets deep inside the psychology of why messies have trouble letting stuff go and getting a grip on their lives. Hearing these excuses rather than reading them has a great impact; like she's getting in your head! Sandra has really unlocked some of my thought habits for me, and I'm so grateful - it's enabling me to break the physical habits that create chaos.
