Publisher's summary

Comedian and cult hero Chris Gethard performs his laugh-out-loud, kick-in-the-pants self-help narrative for anyone who ever felt like they didn’t fit in or couldn’t catch a break, showing us how to get over our fear of failure and start living life on our own terms. This audiobook edition of Lose Well concludes with exclusive bonus conversations with Chris Gethard and special guests who are referenced throughout the audiobook: Gregg Gethard, Mike Dolan, Todd Tondera, Danny Tobia, Mark Moran, Frank Piegaro, and Jeremy Redleaf.

Let’s face it: we all want a seat at the cool table, a great job, and loads of money. But most of us won’t be able to achieve this widely accepted, black-or-white, definition of winning, which makes us feel like failures, that we’re destined to a life of loserdom. That’s the conventional wisdom. It’s also crap, according to comedian and cult hero Chris Gethard, who knows a thing of two about losing. Failing is an art form, he argues; in fact, it’s the only the way we’re ever going to discover who we are, what we really want, and how to live the kind of life we only dreamed about.

Setting flame to vision boards and tossing out the "seven simple steps" to achieving anything, the host of the eponymous TruTV talk show and the wildly popular podcast Beautiful Stories from Anonymous People illustrates his personal and professional manifesto with hilarious and ultimately empowering stories about his own setbacks, missteps, and public failures, from the cancellation of his Comedy Central sitcom after seven episodes to rediscovering his comedic voice and life’s purpose on a public access channel.

With his trademark wit and inspiring storytelling - a cross between David Sedaris and Jenny Lawson - Gethard teaches us how to power through our own hero’s journey, whether we’re a 15-year-old starting a punk band or a 50-year-old mother of three launching an Etsy page. In the process, he shows us how to fail with grace, laugh on the way down, and as we dust ourselves off, how to transform inevitable failures into endless opportunities. It might get a little messy, but that’s exactly the point. Because the first step in living on your own terms is learning how to lose well, and more often than not, the revolutionary act of failing lets us witness firsthand what awaits us on the other side.

Chris is the best

Great follow up to A Bad Idea I’m About to Do. Chris is the best and this book can be read as either a fun read or motivation to get your ass in great to do the thing you keep pushing to the sidelines out of fear of failure.
The narration from Chris makes this what it is. Couldn’t recommend this enough!

Loved this

This audio is a really wonderful balance of comedy and inspiration. I can't imagine that reading this one would be nearly as fun as listening to Chris tell his own stories and express his thoughts in this audio version. Prior to listening to this I wasn't familiar with Chris or his work. Loved this and highly recommend.

Stunned but not surprised by this gem.

Geth is eloquent, thoughtful, and impactful as ever. Fantastic to hear expanded stories I’ve only otherwise picked up on anecdotal reference to. Amazing additional content for the audiobook. Will continue to support this dude forever and recommend everything he does to everyone I know.

Best book written by a comedian

It’s ridiculous to rate a book on a 1 to 5 scale.
If War and Peace is a five I guess this book would be -24.
But if War and Peace is a gourmet meal it a 5 star gourmet meal.
This book is a 5 star healthy protein bar. It’s definitely one of the best books written by a comedian that I’ve read. Most of the time I can’t even finish them, they are do trivial. Usually comedians can’t write well. Chris is a good story teller.
I don’t quite think he is in a league with David Sedaris , Dave Barry or Spaulding Gray...but I think he could be a great writer / story teller... if he wanted to...
As far as this book is concerned really like his stories (if that was not clear)I was a little board by the life coaching but other people might like that part. And it would have been easy for me to skip those parts if I liked.
If this book were longer I would have stayed with it. And he seems like such a mensch, you have to like him.
Chris seems like a fun interesting guy, someone I’d like to hang out with (don’t worry I’m not a stalker).
The reason I listened in the first place is because I love the HBO show. It’s interesting to see a guy like Chris do a bunch of things some I love like the HBO show, some I like such as this book. Some I’m on the fence with like the podcast and some I hate like the Chris Gethard show. But whatever he puts out I’m going to at least try. I’m a fan.
I just downloaded “A bad idea I’m about to do”

Great

I loved Chris’s first book and this one is even better. I really enjoyed hearing him read it. I was lucky enough to meet him briefly and have him sign my copy of his first book and he wrote such a nice message to me and my wife. He is a good dude and deserves all the success in the world

Humanity...

I love this guy. He's flawed, funny and not overly preachy. He's got great stories. And he's just enjoyable to listen to. He also has said a couple things that really resonate with me. (the bonus material was just so so.)

Also his podcast is great.

Really enjoyed his narration.

Hilarious, Thoughtful and Motivating!

I have been a Chris Gethard fan for a few years or so and was extremely excited for his latest. It did not disappoint. Chris is as honest as ever and tells a number of funny inspiring tales in which he chases his dreams despite crazy odds.

The audio version also comes with bonus content and interviews which make it all the more endearing.
