Publisher's summary

Belva Plain captured readers' hearts with her first novel, Evergreen, which Delacorte published more than 30 years ago. It topped the New York Times best-seller list for 41 weeks and aired as an NBC-TV miniseries. In total, more than 20 of her books have been New York Times best sellers.

Before becoming a novelist, Belva Plain wrote short stories for many major magazines, but taking care of a husband and three children did not give her the time to concentrate on the novel she had always wanted to write. When she looked back and said she didn't have the time, she felt as though she had been making excuses. In retrospect, she said, "I didn't make the time." But, she reminded us, during the era that she was raising her family, women were supposed to concentrate only on their children. Today 30 million copies of her books are in print.

A Barnard College graduate who majored in history, Belva Plain enjoyed a wonderful marriage of more than 40 years to Irving Plain, an ophthalmologist. Widowed for more than 25 years, Ms. Plain continued to reside in New Jersey, where she and her husband had raised their family and which was still home to her nearby children and grandchildren until her death in October 2010.

Outstanding

I don't know what audible tape the previous reviewer listened to (1 star by "subterfuge") but it wasn't this one. No Christian slant here, except to refer to how some religious upbringing can negatively affect our inner child.

The author swings between recordings infront of a live audience to personal meditations. A wonderful speaker and very convincing.

A useful tape for anyone, not just those with extreme childhood experiences.

Spiritual spring cleaning.

I first saw this author on PBS in his Homecoming series. I was drunk and just started crying about all the wrongs that were done to me (drunk imaginings), I attended AA/NA and have been quite sober for 29 years and I bought this series on cassette tapes to review myself again and again. This is thorough. This man is a recovered alcoholic with a doctorate in psychology and theology. He is thorough. Thank you, Mr. Bradshaw.

Amazing

This book has given me hope! Had no idea there’s a reason I’m the way I am. It scares the hell out of me that I could turn my kids into me!! Full of pain and insecurity. I’m working my ass off since listening to this book to not continue passing the pain on. Easier said then done....

Well Worth The Read !

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes. Bradshaw does an excellent job of addressing our flawed, broken, human condition and offers some therapeutic avenues for healing.

What other book might you compare Home Coming to and why?

No other book comes to mind at present.

What does John Bradshaw bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

His personal delivery "makes" the book more personal. His being candid, his humor, & his insights speak to my human heart more than words on a page.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes. Actually, my wife & I listened to it while taking a road trip.

Any additional comments?

Bradshaw's reading/speaking makes the book more meaningful. His being candid is endearing & encouraging.
