"If you're tired of standard psychological parlance and still frustrated with your quality of life, this book can be a godsend." (Martha Beck, columnist for O Magazine)
"Trying to 'change' negative thoughts through cognitive gymnastics is like trying to win a war single-handedly. Why waste a life trying the impossible? In Get Out of Your Mind and Into Your Life: The New Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, advocate Dr. Steven Hayes escorts the mildly depressed, angry, and anxiety prone through a new approach to handling suffering - universal human suffering caused by language's illusions. Rather than fighting off bad thoughts and feelings with internal pep talks, Hayes beautifully explains how to embrace those pessimistic and foreboding mental voices (much like welcoming home one's cranky, play-worn children), 'defuse' them with respectful attention, and commit to leading a purposeful life that includes their occasional ranting." I would highly recommend this book to anyone and everyone. It was surprising and refreshing to see a clinical approach to spiritual traditions. The book is very well written and uses great illustrations and analogies to help deepen the understanding. It really resonated with me and has already helped me make dramatic helpful changes in my life (with practice - not just by reading it). Read this book and practice the well designed exercises. I'm going to read it again and again!
This is very interesting and will probably help millions of people. As a therapist I find this book very usefull, for myself and my clients. A great supplement to traditional cbt, with many good examples and explanations. ACT can be like a Matrix experience for some people. This book is serious written with humor in a caring way.
Love is not every thing, its the only thing. -Steven Hayes, 2016
Would rather hear Steven's voice. It is great, and it's weird to hear his writing in a "happy" lady's voice. Her sing-song way to talking seems inappropriate for the content and makes me not want to listen. Although I love the content.
I love the way it's written. The author practices like he preaches. The book is written in a methodical and intriguing fashion yet, with an incredibly high possibility for reader comprehension.. Can't wait to become "willing with mine and my clients" anxiety. " really cool book!
ACT is a remarkable 3ed Wave Western Psychology CBT offshoot tool that is most promising in its ability to help individuals help themselves. I have seen it work which is what got me to read this book.
Psych is the spirit, ology is the study of. I.e. The study of the Spirit.
Astro-Psychology is the first complete system of "psychology in recorded history c.4,000BCE found on the walls in Classical African Civilization, Kemet (ancient Egypt). Books like Metu Neter Vol 1 by Dr. Ra Un Nefer Amen or Doublespeak in Black and White by me point this out. And demonstrate that what I call Astro-Psychology is a value based Spirit inclusive psychology. Hays' work reaches some of this original understanding in the human family by somewhat different means (RFT) but it is good to see the Spirit (The observer self) put back into psychology.
I recommend it along with Change your Brain Change your life by Dr. Amen which, addresses some of the functional biology underlying Hays' mental conceptual focus.
Note: Astro-Psychology (cosmologics) includes both the functional and conceptual in a comprehensive universal hierarchical arrangement.
Finally back to modern times, I have downloaded both CBT and ACT IPhone apps 😇 and look forward to continuing my comparative psychology studies utilizing ancient (🔺🔺🔺TOL) 🙏🏿 and modern tools👀.
Depressing to listen to
Wish they had these audibles:

"Narrator sounds like a robot"
I really can't imagine that anyone would be able to put up with the robotic narration. Read the print book if you can.
I don't think there is anything wrong with the book. It came highly recommended to me but due to visual problems I decided to download the audio version. It's a shame that the author's work has been let down by the narrator.
Didn't listen to enough of it to find out. Gave up early on due to the narrator.
I will be requesting a credit refund for this.
