Publisher's summary

The Sweet Potato Queens are back and bawdier than ever in Southern belle extraordinaire Jill Conner Browne’s ninth edition of the hysterical series. Having experienced pretty much ALL of the crappy parts of life, Browne feels it is her duty to render whatever assistance she can to her fellow sufferers - and she does so in her own inimitable fashion.

Her father taught her there are very few situations in life that we really and truly cannot change, and it is up to us to figure out how to either make fun OUT of them - or make fun OF them. And fortunately for the rest of us, Browne is well equipped for both. Including the exploits of the Queen contingent and her family, she delivers applicable tidbits like:

  • Thinking or talking about watermelon can save any negative situation.
  • If you get drunk in Scotland, you can’t have your cow with you.
  • When sanity and reason fail, you can always cheerfully resort to ridicule.
  • Denial means that every situation is perfectly perfect.

More fun than a Cracker Barrel full of monkeys, Fat Is the New 30 will change your life - or at least give you ideas for making fun of your own self.

Read, don't listen!!!

I have read all of Jill Conner Browne's Sweet Potato Queens books and loved them all, re-reading them many, many times. I've seen interviews with the author and know that she can carry on a normal conversation.
But this.... This is just painful to listen to. Her pace is so slow, so carefully enunciated and just ... Draggy that I couldn't listen to it.
I highly recommend all of the SPQ books, they are truly laugh-out-loud funny (and most of them have some fab recipes, too!) but get the books and read them. You'll never appreciate the humor even if you can get through the audible version.

Just didn't find it funny

Would you try another book from Jill Conner Browne and/or Jill Conner Browne?

Sometimes you need to be a part of a culture to understand certain parts of it's humour. I think this is one of those times. Either that or it's just not funny. I'm Australian and it didn't even make me smile. So no, I wouldn't try another book by Jill Conner Browne. Her brand of humour escapes me.

Would you ever listen to anything by Jill Conner Browne again?

No

What does Jill Conner Browne bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Nothing

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

Jill Conner Browne's accent is lovely to listen to.

Torturous!

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Jill Conner Browne--but I DESPISE this audiobook. I didn't even make it past the first chapter. Jill Conner Browne should never in a million years read her own book. She's so focused on enunciation that she totally loses the rhythm of the book and just completely destroys all of the comedic moments that are always in her books. Thank the Heavens I didn't pay a lot for this. I'm just crushed.

Terrible

The narrator was awful. She sounded like she was struggling to read the entire time. She also mispronounced words so terribly that I had to rewind several times to figure out what she was trying to say. I couldn't even finish the book. I'm so glad that I didn't actually pay for this. Maybe it would be fine if I were to read it myself instead of listening to it. But I was not impressed with the narrator nor the actual book. There was a lot of rambling that went on MUCH too long to be humorous. It also went off topic so much that I wasn't even sure what the point was. My advice is to try a sample before you purchase the book....

Narration was terrible

I couldn't even complete the 1st chapter between the clique story and horrible narration. If your looking for a slooooow listen to put you to sleep this is your book. =(

DO NOT PURCHASE THE AUDIO VERSION!!!!!!!

What disappointed you about Fat Is the New 30?

I am a HUGE fan of Jill Conner Browne and all of the Sweet Potato Queen books, however this audio book was SO SO SO horrible I could not listen to this for more than 5 minutes! I read the other reviews and thought to myself "wow they are being really nit-picky" - NO THEY ARE BEING HONEST!! She reads SO SO SO SLOW it is PAINFUL!!! It is like she takes a full breath between each and every single word! I can't even comment on the storyline because I was so distracted by how horrible the audio was!

How could the performance have been better?

Read faster... speed it up like the Sweet Potato Queen books!

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

Can't comment... didn't listen long enough!

Any additional comments?

DO NOT PURCHASE!!!

Couldn't get past the first 5 minutes!

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

I can't really rate the story because the narration was so dreadful that I stopped listening after 5 minutes. This is the first time I have done that. I just couldn't abide another moment.

Has Fat Is the New 30 turned you off from other books in this genre?

No

What didn’t you like about Jill Conner Browne’s performance?

She spoke sooooo sloooowly and drearily.

Any additional comments?

I'm disappointed, as it would probably have been reasonably entertaining.
