Publisher's summary

The Sweet Potato Queens are back and bawdier than ever in Southern belle extraordinaire Jill Conner Browne’s ninth edition of the hysterical series. Having experienced pretty much ALL of the crappy parts of life, Browne feels it is her duty to render whatever assistance she can to her fellow sufferers - and she does so in her own inimitable fashion.

Her father taught her there are very few situations in life that we really and truly cannot change, and it is up to us to figure out how to either make fun OUT of them - or make fun OF them. And fortunately for the rest of us, Browne is well equipped for both. Including the exploits of the Queen contingent and her family, she delivers applicable tidbits like:

  • Thinking or talking about watermelon can save any negative situation.
  • If you get drunk in Scotland, you can’t have your cow with you.
  • When sanity and reason fail, you can always cheerfully resort to ridicule.
  • Denial means that every situation is perfectly perfect.

More fun than a Cracker Barrel full of monkeys, Fat Is the New 30 will change your life - or at least give you ideas for making fun of your own self.

Another homerun

What did you love best about Fat Is the New 30?

I love listening to Jill Conner Browne talk. I love her voice and the way she tells stories, I could listen to her talk all day. By the end of this book, I was even thinking in my head with a little southern draw.

What’s an idea from the book that you will remember?

I love the positive outlook, she always tells tome great stories that will make you laugh, but makes sure to pull at your heart strings a little bit too.

DO NOT PURCHASE THE AUDIO VERSION!!!!!!!

What disappointed you about Fat Is the New 30?

I am a HUGE fan of Jill Conner Browne and all of the Sweet Potato Queen books, however this audio book was SO SO SO horrible I could not listen to this for more than 5 minutes! I read the other reviews and thought to myself "wow they are being really nit-picky" - NO THEY ARE BEING HONEST!! She reads SO SO SO SLOW it is PAINFUL!!! It is like she takes a full breath between each and every single word! I can't even comment on the storyline because I was so distracted by how horrible the audio was!

How could the performance have been better?

Read faster... speed it up like the Sweet Potato Queen books!

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

Can't comment... didn't listen long enough!

Any additional comments?

DO NOT PURCHASE!!!

Couldn't get past the first 5 minutes!

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

I can't really rate the story because the narration was so dreadful that I stopped listening after 5 minutes. This is the first time I have done that. I just couldn't abide another moment.

Has Fat Is the New 30 turned you off from other books in this genre?

No

What didn’t you like about Jill Conner Browne’s performance?

She spoke sooooo sloooowly and drearily.

Any additional comments?

I'm disappointed, as it would probably have been reasonably entertaining.

Listen to the sample before you buy.

Any additional comments?

I wanted to love this book. I was looking forward to the humor, the laughs, the stories, the narration and all the fun it seemed that would be this audio book. The author as narrator just killed it. She reads so slowly and deliberately it is painful. You would think that she could just treat this style of book like a conversation and speak in a conversational tone, but she does not. She enunciates painfully hesitantly and by the time she has slogged through a paragraph there is no joy in it. Maybe I need a tranquilizer or something. I am actually going to return it for my credit back. I will never be able to listen to this book. This may be a fantastic book to read, but to listen to it is pure aggravation.

A cure for what ails ya

All the Sweet Potato Queen books are wonderful and this one may be the best . I'm still laughing. I highly recommend JCB's humor as an antidote to whatever is buggin' ya.

Read, don't listen!!!

I have read all of Jill Conner Browne's Sweet Potato Queens books and loved them all, re-reading them many, many times. I've seen interviews with the author and know that she can carry on a normal conversation.
But this.... This is just painful to listen to. Her pace is so slow, so carefully enunciated and just ... Draggy that I couldn't listen to it.
I highly recommend all of the SPQ books, they are truly laugh-out-loud funny (and most of them have some fab recipes, too!) but get the books and read them. You'll never appreciate the humor even if you can get through the audible version.

Not a book my Mom would like

While Jill made me both laugh and cry in this book and I felt a real kinship with her, I can't recommend this book.

She sends some mixed messages and with that and her profanity, I just can't send you off to buy it expecting a clean book. Too much profanity for my taste.

It was a struggle, but I have decided not to buy the other books, despite the fact I really like Jill, and I feel she is a very talented person and writer. I love the pictures she paints with her words (without the profanity).

She has a huge vocabulary and really Jill, you don't need that F word to express yourself.

Precious

What made the experience of listening to Fat Is the New 30 the most enjoyable?

Hearing Jill read her own work. Her tales are of her life and experiences, this just adds to the satisfaction she would give that much of herself to her listeners. Even through the rough part about her mother.

What other book might you compare Fat Is the New 30 to and why?

Any of her other works or Olivia deBelle Byrd's, "Miss Hildreth Worn Brown"

Which character – as performed by Jill Conner Browne – was your favorite?

Loved the story about the gator hunt! That was hysterical!

What did you learn from Fat Is the New 30 that you would use in your daily life?

I learned if my own writing career should ever take off in a way that Jill's has then I might truly have to think long and hard about how to do a book tour: plane or bus.

Any additional comments?

In the book Jill talks of "Big Butter Jesus" she saw while doing a bus book tour. Just as she said, the original singer and his video is on Youtube BUT I was shocked to see "Jesus" had been struck by lightening. Guess Heywood's line in the song about God not liking idols built was true.

Faaaannnntastic!

I loved everything about this book, including Jill’s narration. Apparently some folks thinks she reads too slowly, but I suspect they are from up north. Bless their hearts. For those of who like a few extra syllables here and there, the cadence is perfect. This book resonated with me more than any before, particularly when she spoke of caring for her mother at the end of her life. I’m sure I’ll revisit it again before long.

Great entertainment salted with nuggets of wisdom

I was looking for some mindless entertainment and laugh out loud humor. After 2 years of Covid craziness and mass hypnosis this audio book was balm to the soul! I recommend it! It is deeper than it looks!
