Publisher's summary

In Dad is Fat, stand-up comedian Jim Gaffigan, who’s best known for his legendary riffs on Hot Pockets, bacon, manatees, and McDonald's, expresses all the joys and horrors of life with five young children - everything from cousins ("celebrities for little kids") to toddlers’ communication skills ("they always sound like they have traveled by horseback for hours to deliver important news"), to the eating habits of four-year-olds ("there is no difference between a four-year-old eating a taco and throwing a taco on the floor"). Dad is Fat is sharply observed, explosively funny, and a cry for help from a man who has realized he and his wife are outnumbered in their own home.

Poignant, not just funny.

More a humorous book about parenting than anything else. Enjoyed the glimpse into Jim and Jeanie's life, living in a five-story walk-up in Manhattan, raising 5 kids.

I'm not even a parent, but as an aunt I can relate. Very funny!

Intreding

But I still didn't find it funny. I love Jim Gaffigan but this wasn't like his stand up so don't get it if thats what you have in mind. You'll be disappointed. I don't fall Jim for reading it but you can tell he's not so much reading it in his performance inflection

Crying in laughter on the family road trip

We listened to this audio book on 1.25 speed. Within minutes my husband and I and our 11 year old son were laughing out loud. We enjoyed it so much I sent a link to all my siblings. Hilarious. It won't disappoint.

fun

I love Jim Gaffigan! The book was worth listening to and made my kids and I laugh. He did include jokes from his stand-up cds that we knew but most of it was new. It was very entertaining.

Read if you want to engage in 'parent talk.'

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I might recommend it to a friend if they're a parent. As a non-parent, it felt pretty repetitive and dull halfway through the book. I don't join in on parent conversations in real life b/c they don't interest me, and this was just that.

Would you ever listen to anything by Jim Gaffigan again?

My dislike of this book was due to the topic, not the author. However, I think I might stick to his stand-up shows in the future. Even though his comedic style is conveyed very well in audio form, I realized I much prefer watching him up on stage, performing in front of an audience.

Any additional comments?

It was interesting to hear about Gaffigan's life off stage and his relationship with his family.

Great Familiar Narrative

Would you consider the audio edition of Dad Is Fat to be better than the print version?

Jim Gaffigan's years of stage performance make him easy to listen to. He crafts his intonation and phrasing expertly.

What did you like best about this story?

This book is great for anyone who had kids or is thinking about having kids. He bluntly tells it like it is and does it in an interesting way.

Any additional comments?

I gave the book 4 stars overall due to the fact that a lot of the material found in the book comes from his stage act. That being said, if you like Jim Gaffigan, you'll love this book.
