Publisher's summary

In Dad is Fat, stand-up comedian Jim Gaffigan, who’s best known for his legendary riffs on Hot Pockets, bacon, manatees, and McDonald's, expresses all the joys and horrors of life with five young children - everything from cousins ("celebrities for little kids") to toddlers’ communication skills ("they always sound like they have traveled by horseback for hours to deliver important news"), to the eating habits of four-year-olds ("there is no difference between a four-year-old eating a taco and throwing a taco on the floor"). Dad is Fat is sharply observed, explosively funny, and a cry for help from a man who has realized he and his wife are outnumbered in their own home.

Really fun to listen to.

Perfect delivery by the author. I enjoyed this book tremendously. Any parent can relate to and appreciate Jim’s stories and theories on parenting. I would definitely recommend this book.

Family Hilarity

I thoroughly enjoyed this book! Jim Gaffigan’s delivery is the BEST! Just when I think he’s adding in an innocuous detail, he casually adds in a hilarious observation. And they’re especially funny because they’re TRUE. I love his impression of his kids’ voices, Finally, his heartwarming affirmations of his wife, Jeannie, gave the book a nice collaborative feel. Love his honesty of simultaneously worshiping her and expecting her to do all the work. Again. Funny because it’s true! Looking forward to listening to another book!

Not for Gaffigan Fans

Would you try another book from Jim Gaffigan and/or Jim Gaffigan?

Not a book. Audio standup? Always yes.

What did you like best about this story?

Funny stories about parenting--and that is it!

What didn’t you like about Jim Gaffigan’s performance?

POOR and disappointing performance from a man who knows how to engage an audience. There were audible stumbles very very frequently, and the jokes were entirely recycled from his standup--and without the comedic delivery. At the beginning of the audiobook he jokes that he needed to write a book to afford a bigger house ASAP, and I think he was telling the truth. This is an extremely rushed product from one of my favorite comedians. Such a disappointment.

Was Dad Is Fat worth the listening time?

Only because I had 15 hours to kill on a long drive. Otherwise no.

Any additional comments?

You will likely enjoy this book much more as a parent who doesn't know what to expect from gaffigan's comedy, and no prior knowledge of his standup.

Sometimes You Gotta Laugh!

What did you love best about Dad Is Fat?

If you've ever heard an audiobook read by the author, especially one about their own life, it can sometimes seem annoying. Like they're trying to make you think what they think is the right way - the normal way. Jim Gaffigan doesn't do that. All he does is tell you about himself, and, maybe, some others like him, and I love that! His imperfections and all are personal, informative, and funny - True Gaffigan!

The other great thing is he reads his book just like his act only slightly quieter and calmer which makes it enjoyable listening to it on my commute. I'm sure the drivers next to me think I'm crazy cracking up laughing in my car at such calm words.

Any additional comments?

I'm not a parent, and I still found this hilarious and calming!

Great books, some old material

Short Review: Gaffigan is funny. My kind of funny. Simple stories about his life and how hard it is. He loves his kids, wife, life and his laziness. I can relate to all of it. The only thing that keeps me from rating it higher is that if you have seen Gaffigan live or on his tv specials you probably have heard about 20-25 percent of the book already. If you don't know Gaffigan, then it is probably a 4 star book. If you are a fan, then then this is probably a 3 star book.

Yawn

This is a cautionary tale about pro-creating beyond one’s means. The author describes the mundane life of raising five young children. It’s mostly boring, at times depressing, and not funny.

hilarious

Loved how honest he was. If you're expecting, you should read this. If not for the lessons, at least you'll get a good laugh out of it... and parenthood.
