Publisher's summary

In Dad is Fat, stand-up comedian Jim Gaffigan, who’s best known for his legendary riffs on Hot Pockets, bacon, manatees, and McDonald's, expresses all the joys and horrors of life with five young children - everything from cousins ("celebrities for little kids") to toddlers’ communication skills ("they always sound like they have traveled by horseback for hours to deliver important news"), to the eating habits of four-year-olds ("there is no difference between a four-year-old eating a taco and throwing a taco on the floor"). Dad is Fat is sharply observed, explosively funny, and a cry for help from a man who has realized he and his wife are outnumbered in their own home.

Entertaining enough.

Just needed a break from all the serious pregnancy and childbirth books that I'm cramming in my mind. It wasn't amazing but it was entertaining enough. I giggled a bit throughout but it wasn't laugh out loud. I am glad that Jim Gaffigan actually narrated it.

Save your money and see his show

Would you try another book from Jim Gaffigan and/or Jim Gaffigan?

No.

What was most disappointing about Jim Gaffigan’s story?

The whole book was basically short story anecdotes and half-baked jokes about kids. Would translate much better as part of his stand-up act.

Which character – as performed by Jim Gaffigan – was your favorite?

Gaffigan must for parents

Loved this sarcastic take on parenting. Made me feel like a normal patent. Jim and his wife make parenting seem relatable and finally a way to articulate to our friends what parenting is about.

Extremely funny, insignificant, and very entertaining!!!

Jim Gaffigan is an extremely talented and hilarious comedian, and him reading it really brings it up. Dad is Fat is already funny, but when Gaffigan reads it, it's even better. Of you liked thinks like Bossypants or Yes Please or any kind of comedy, you'll love this!

Had me laughing tears

After my second baby was born, I struggled with postpartum depression. It required medication and treatment. listening to this book was part of my own treatment. To laugh at the craziness of Jim's life and see the funny in my own. It was a light during some dark time. not that it was a cure but trying to laugh or get of my own head was helpful!

Relatable-ish

As the only single and childless member of book club this wasn't my choice, but, peer pressure and stuff.

I loved the first part of the book. Jim's adventures navigating the world of friends-with-kids were infinitely relatable to this 30-something, and I found myself laughing out loud many times. As the memoir progressed it was still enjoyable, but in a "having dinner with friends who talk about their kids all the time" kind of way.

Overall, I liked it. Maybe someday when I'm in a different place in life I'll read it again and giggle my way through it.
