I very much enjoyed this course and the performance by Jack Kornfield. He does have a distinct almost lyrical voice, but I felt it added to the teaching. I'm going through a tough time and would be feeling depressed but when I started to listen to this recording I'd automatically feel better and more at peace.
I'm new to Buddhist teachings and meditation, and I felt this was a nice introduction. He discusses the principles of Buddhism (Four Noble Truths, etc) but it's less like a lecture and more like just a conversation with a friend. At first I wasn't really sure I was learning anything because he just hits on terms and definitions very briefly, while teaching more through examples and storytelling, but in hindsight I was learning exactly what I needed to learn to know if Buddhism is something I want to study further. I can't define the Four Noble Truths yet, but I know I believe in equality of all living creatures and that "when you plant a mango seed you get a mango tree". This course was wonderful and not only gave me a great foundation to understand Buddhism, but made me want to study it further.
Excellent book for people interested in learning about Buddhism. Jack Kornfield explains it all in a simple and inspiring way. Don't be put down by comments below about the way he speaks, you won't regret listening to this book.
Phenomenal intro ! This audio journey deepened my understanding of the basic tenets of Buddhism while at the same time providing so much room for simultaneous reflection and participation. Dr Kornfield's voice is easy to listen to and very down to earth. So incredibly worthwhile.
great stories and lessons. it almosy seems too simple, yet the simplistic is complex and takes time and practice. recommended for anyone Interested in knowing the helpfulness of loving kindness, but it may not be for the absolute beginner looking for a more textbook version of what Buddhism is.
I had read reviews about Kornfield's delivery and was worried because it doesn't take much to annoy me when it comes to the performance of these audio books. At first I did find his delivery slightly grating. As time went on and I got absorbed in the content, however, any annoyance with the delivery went away. I would definitely recommend this book. I will probably listen to it again. For anyone with any interest in Buddhism, this is a very good primer. I can see where it would be helpful to have at least a passing acquaintance with eastern philosophy, but anybody could listen to this and understand it. People who don't consider themselves to be buddhist can listen to this and get a lot out of it without being asked to change your beliefs. Our western minds can definitely use more of this eastern wisdom.
This is different than a typical audiobook in that it's more like a meditation retreat, which makes it really effective. The tone and the format suits the topic. Highly recommended.
Gentle, beautiful and funny. Jack Kornfield's insight and extraordinary humanity is profound and graceful. This recording has helped me immensely in my search for peace.
Say something about yourself!
I've encountered Buddhist philosophy at many points over my life, and I've always found it beautiful. But for some reason, I've never actually turned my attention to its foundations. Or if I have, nothing stuck with me for whatever reason. At any rate, I decided I needed a refresher course on what makes this system tick. There are many choices on Audible to choose from in this regard, and I'm glad I picked this one.
This is a live recording, so there are a few coughing distractions here and there from the otherwise attentive audience, but nothing that would make you lose focus. Jack Kornfield is an amazing ambassador to this faith, engaging his listener with all of the compassion and mercy you'd expect, but also with humor. The result is an experience that transcends what you'd get out of a book.
I really enjoy Jack Kornfield. This book provides a good overview of the Buddhist philosphy without getting lost in the weeds. His quiet, humorous delivery is very pleasant to listen to. I really learned a great deal without having to focus deeply - I mostly listened to this in transit.
Gives great insight into the study of Buddhism. I was familiar with Buddhism prior to this (having read 2 or 3 books). This not only provides an intro to the concepts, it also gives a slightly deeper dive into each one. Jack's voice came off as weird at first, but i quickly got used to it and found it perfect for the teachings.
For someone who wants to further their early study of Buddhism, I would recommend this audio book. Great for the ride to work and gets you geared up and ready to deal with the work place!
"Well presented good read"
Good introduction to Buddhism - very interesting and easy to digest. Some minor repetition in places however this did not detract from the overall quality of the work.
"Great Introduction to the Essential Teachings"
Jack Kornfield is just just brilliant. This is the first time I've encountered him, and I started the audiobook (it's really a recording to a live audience) thinking that he was a bit spaced out! It turns out he's just not trying to prove anything. Instead he has a very gentle, very humorous approach to explaining the spiritual Buddhist teachings in an incredibly clear and detailed manner. It's a perfectly enlightening introduction to Buddhism. Enjoy.
"not a audio book"
it is a dragged out very romanticized description. heavy use of quotes. title is misleading. not really a book but a recoding of a series of seminars.
"Great introduction to Buddhism"
Straight forward and simple introduction to Buddhism without going to deep into the teachings of Buddha.
Jack Kornfield speaks with a soft slow voice without being boring or putting you to sleep. If you are looking for a even easier and softer introduction to Buddhism I recommend you to start by reading "Buddhism for busy people" before reading this book.
"Lovely to listen to"
I have not read the print
The overall lecture is grat
I have to say at the very beginning i wasn't too sure about jack kornfield and his american accent but half hour in and i was hooked. his voice is very soothing and relaxing. It was my nighttime routine and i was falling asleep very easily therefore i am listening to it again, and i will probably do it few more time since it's a great listen.
I wanted to start listening to books since this gives me the freedom of doing activities like sewing or pottering around the house while listening to something interesting.
I bought it based on the reviews and I wasnt disapointed. This is a great book if you dont know anything at all about buddhism and want to start at some point. It doesnt matter if you know much religion all together. This is simple and adapted to our world and the times we live in.
The book is very entertaining and is read in front of a live audience.the best part is that the author takes a subject like religion which is often seem as too seroius or ceremonial but is not afraid of making inncoent jokes and bringing examples that put a smile on you.I highly recommend it.
I have read books on Buddhism in the past but found this to be the most accessible. It is read in a very light and calming way. I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in Buddhism/mindfulness or spiritual development in general.
"Buddism for Beginers"
Not to bad but I will listen to it again as i never heard the end of the chapters because i would be a sleep before the end. I listen to audio books when i am going to bed or having a nap as it helps me relax.
