I grew up on Golden Age Radio, I love to learn about a great many things, and I enjoy a wide variety of genres. Me, bored? Never!
I've encountered Buddhist philosophy at many points over my life, and I've always found it beautiful. But for some reason, I've never actually turned my attention to its foundations. Or if I have, nothing stuck with me for whatever reason. At any rate, I decided I needed a refresher course on what makes this system tick. There are many choices on Audible to choose from in this regard, and I'm glad I picked this one.
This is a live recording, so there are a few coughing distractions here and there from the otherwise attentive audience, but nothing that would make you lose focus. Jack Kornfield is an amazing ambassador to this faith, engaging his listener with all of the compassion and mercy you'd expect, but also with humor. The result is an experience that transcends what you'd get out of a book.
I just could not get past the delivery by the speaker. His cadence, tone, everything was unpleasant to listen to, as many other readers have said.
This is more like a collection of sermons than an introduction to Buddhism. If there were Buddhist radio in the vein of Christian radio, it might sound like this. I don't need the cheer-leading and hand-holding to learn, and I found it frustrating to slog through. Not what I was looking for. I was hoping to learn about "Buddhism the religion and attendant religious institutions," not listen to "assorted bits of Buddhism and the practical life lessons you should learn from them."
No - couldn't get past his voice.
He's got an extremely distinctive vocal style. I could see it being comforting and relaxing for folks who like it. For me, it was nails on a chalk board. Please, please, please, preview before buying. I feel silly for not doing so.
Gives great insight into the study of Buddhism. I was familiar with Buddhism prior to this (having read 2 or 3 books). This not only provides an intro to the concepts, it also gives a slightly deeper dive into each one. Jack's voice came off as weird at first, but i quickly got used to it and found it perfect for the teachings.
For someone who wants to further their early study of Buddhism, I would recommend this audio book. Great for the ride to work and gets you geared up and ready to deal with the work place!
I'm enjoying this talk immensely. Jack Kornfield is a master speaker, and has an excellent speaking voice. He clearly speaks from his heart. The talk is full of great quotes from great people, and Kornfield knows exactly where to use them to make his point. He mixes humor, quotes, wisdom and compassion to make for a great and compelling introduction to Buddhism. This is one of the best Audible books I can remember listening to.
Mr.Kornfield is amazing. I have no idea what the previous poster meant about Mr. Kornfields voice, I actually listened to the Audio while driving to and from work and found his voice pleasant and kept me interested. I have found a new inspired interest in Buddhism and will likely purchase all of Mr. Kornfields work as I further my study.
it was exactly what i was looking for, i don't say that very often either. i sure wish i could get a table of contents to assist with taking notes. readers voice was fine and humourous at times surprisingly.
I really enjoyed this, and unlike others, I loved the author's voice (but then, I love Eckhart Tolle's voice too!). I can see I will listen to this again and again. It's an accessible entry into Buddhism.
Great stories and passion but I could not get past the sleepiness of his presentation. He never captured my attention. Listen to the sample before you download. If you can tolerate 8 hours of that - be my guest. Perhaps I should try harder and this is my fault but I am going to look for another book to try again.
"Buddism for Beginers"
Not to bad but I will listen to it again as i never heard the end of the chapters because i would be a sleep before the end. I listen to audio books when i am going to bed or having a nap as it helps me relax.
