Publisher's Summary

The teen years can be challenging and even scary for parents and those involved with youth. Attitudes and behaviors of the adolescent can be unhealthy for him and for the family. However, good boundaries are the bedrock of not only better relationships, but also maturity, safety, and growth, especially for teens and their parents.

In order to help teenagers grow into healthy adults, parents and youth workers need to help them experience how to take responsibility for their behavior, their values, and their lives.

Dr. John Townsend, coauthor of the Gold Medallion Award-winning book Boundaries, is a parent of two teenagers himself. With wisdom and empathy, he applies his biblically based principles to bear on the challenging task of the teen years, showing parents:

  • How to deal with disrespectful attitudes and irresponsible behaviors in your teen;
  • How to set healthy limits and realistic consequences;
  • How to be loving and caring while establishing rules;
  • How to determine specific strategies to deal with problems both big and small.

The book begins by giving parents a way to look at adolescence itself, so they can better understand how a teen thinks, feels, and relates to others. Then it provides the nuts and bolts of what boundaries are all about and how to apply them. There are many topically based chapters devoted to specific problems, from moodiness to school problems to aggression. Finally, Townsend addresses the attitudes, conflicts, and difficulties of parents themselves, helping them resolve their own personal obstacles to being an effective maturing force for the teen.

    "Difference maker"

    Extremely helpful in understanding teens and proding you to recall your own issues while you were a teen. This, along with advice given, help you to deal with your child in more realistic ways than you might have before putting all these points of view together. Advice given is well thought out, gleaned from experience, and based in Christianity. The book is not a Christian book, however, he makes no effort to hide reminding you the way God wants us to raise our children. Excellent book, a must for all parents. I wish I found this when my child was headed to middle school.

    "A Must have for Parents"

    I am a youth worker, and this book is a fantastic guide to understanding and dealing with teenagers. A must have for any parent. The religious overtones are obvious, but hey - They Work!!

    "Practical and Effective"

    Following the advice in this book will not only keep your teens on the right track, but force you to be an adult and deal with you own demons. Well worth the time and a good book to read periodically.

    This is going to make you feel hopeful as a parent. It has good advise and helps me to understand what it was like being a teen and how to deal with that situation without losing it.

    "Help With Your Teen"
    Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

    Yes, for anyone who has a teen. This book has given me good ideas and kept me focus on developing my child for his future growth.

    What’s an idea from the book that you will remember?

    It is important to talk to your child with respect even when you are disciplining him and he gives real life examples of how to do that in various challenging aspects

    "A MUST FOR PARENTS!!!"

    An absolute excellent tool to understand what happened to your child, and how to handle it, when it turned overnight to something you don't know anymore. Very helpful - An absolute MUST for Parents of Teens, and Pre-Teens in my opinion!
    Very detailed and touches most of the problems parents and adolescence will face.
    Thanks a lot Dr. Townsend

    Love the horror genre but read all kinds of stuff! I'm 40 something, a wife, mom and Project Manager for a large Construction Company.

    "VERY helpful"

    This book was surprisinglu helpful and although I didnt agree with everything I did get some things out of it. I liekd the way it explains things we kind of already know (how teens brains are wired differently and they are absorbed with "self") but I am a little bit more of a disciplinarian in the way that I would be tougher if my teen did some of the things in this book and I am not quite into telling a teen that I cannot MAKE them do something and that they have to choose and suffer the consequences (my kids are 16 and 12). Maybe as they get a little older.....
