Craig Beck is a well-regarded family man with two children, a nice home, and a successful media career; a director of several companies and at one time the trustee of a large children’s charity. Outwardly, Craig was a highly successful and functioning professional man in spite of a ‘two-bottles-of-wine-a-night" drinking habit.
For 20 years he struggled to control his drinking, all the time refusing to label himself an alcoholic because he didn't believe he met the stereotypical image that the word portrayed. He tried countless ways to cut down; attempting ‘dry months’, banning himself from drinking spirits, only drinking at the weekend and special occasions (and found that it is amazing how even the smallest of event can suddenly become ‘special’).
All these 'willpower' based attempts to stop drinking failed (exactly as they were destined to do). Slowly he discovered the truth about alcohol addiction and one by one all the lies he had previously believed started to fall apart. For the first time he noticed that he genuinely didn’t want to drink anymore. In this book he will lead you though the same amazing process.
Craig is known around the world as "The Stop Drinking Expert" and many thousands of people just like you have quit drinking using his method. This updated edition of the best-selling Alcohol Lied to Me is new for 2014.
No need to declare yourself an alcoholic. A permanent cure, not a lifetime struggle. No group meetings or expensive rehab. No humiliation, no pain, and 100% no ‘will power’ required. Treats the source of the problem not the symptoms.

I can find a book to love in any genre -- a beautifully written classic, an interesting mystery or sci-fi, a trashy romance. Bring it!
STORY (self-help/motivational) - I used to just be a social drinker. Now I look forward to a glass of wine, sometimes two, most days after work. I've gained weight and feel guilty that I'm probably harming my health. I've made efforts to stop drinking during the week at home, but that bottle of wine always finds a way to jump off the shelf and into my shopping cart. If it doesn't, I just steal a couple beers from my hubby's weekend stash. NOT GOOD!!
This book is motivational, but it also has lots of scientific information. You will hear how alcohol is an ADDICTIVE DRUG that would not obtain an FDA approval of safety if it were introduced today. It has become socially acceptable, almost necessary. We have been brainwashed by the alcohol industry into thinking it makes us more relaxed, more confident, more fun, more sexy and that we are SUPPOSED TO DRINK at social occasions. You will hear the words in my headline over and over during this book, and you will hear why ALL drinkers are playing Russian roulette with potential addiction. Bottom line is we all need to see it for what it is and stop drinking.
Mr. Beck lays out a multi-prong attack for stopping consumption of this poison. It involves understanding the harm alcohol does to your body and its addictive properties. He suggests ways to change how you look at alcohol (including listening to a recording on his website which reprograms your subconscious mind). He also suggests the reader purchase a few supplements, which makes perfect sense when you understand why you need them. He suggests a few "new age" techniques which he admits may sound far-fetched to more traditional thinkers (myself included), but I plan to at least give them a try. I want to stop gaining weight, sleep better and stop doing harm to my body with this poison.
PERFORMANCE - The writer is a great motivational speaker and does a good job reading his own work. He has a pleasant British accent.
OVERALL - If you regularly consume alcohol and want to learn why you should stop drinking and how to do it, this book just might be what you're looking for.
I am currently up to my third listen and have picked up even more with each listen. Using a combination of his own story and a generous amount of fact Craig really makes you reconsider your long held opinions of alcohol.
Considering that I have listened to other audiobooks and read other books on alcohol I thought this may just be a refresher. Boy was I wrong! With Craig's wonderful story telling ability this is a great listen for anyone who is considering their options with alcohol.
As someone who has been alcohol free for nearly 6 months at the time of writing it would have been great to have had this book prior to embarking on my journey of sobriety. He has really opened my eyes to what I am truly capable of without alcohol especially in social situations.
I am now extremely keen to check out some of Craig's other works.
I give Alcohol Lied To Me 2 bigs thumbs up!
When you look at things differently the things you look at change. This book is ideal in helping you see alcohol different than you ever have before. It's not offensive or annoying and leaves you excited to start a new chapter in your life. Narrator does a fantastic job.
I'll give Mr. Beck the benefit of the doubt when it comes to his own success story, but he has some glaring factual errors in this book about AA in particular which, for me, throws up multiple red flags. Wish I could let this pass, as I almost never leave reviews, but this book seems to me too much like quackery to just say nothing and move on.
I loved it. I am going to listen again and take notes. Sending it to friends that might need it
I have been trying to stop drinking for over ten years. I have admitted myself into the hospital six times to medically detox due to my tremors when trying to stop drinking. I always feel amazing when I get this poison out of my body but then someone will encourage me to just have one glass of wine with them. I always get back to my two bottles a night within less than a month and feel like a failure.
I have read other books and tried AA but nothing has clicked for me until now. Thank you Craig and I'm excited to continue to listen to as many of your books as possible. -Marie age 45 USA
I make car parts for the American working man, because that's what I am, and that's who I care about.
A non-willpower approach to quitting drinking, by removing the desire to drink in the first place.
AA places emphasis on willpower and resistance (not to mention labels), while Alcohol Lied to Me emphasizes acceptance of the truth about alcohol; most notably the deadly and poisonous effects thereof.
I also enjoyed his use of the phrase 'problem-drinker' as opposed to 'alcoholic'.
No, and I'm not interested in anything else he has written about.
I honestly believe it will sustain my journey to sobriety.
The 'health' components of this book were so incredibly sub-par that the book would have been much better without them. The hypnosis suggestions and tapping techniques are also extremely 'new-age' and didn't need to be included, either.
However, the secular-spiritual aspects addressing ways of implementing acceptance were tastefully and tactfully presented.
he is really good this book is changing my life so ill keep buying his stuff
"Just aimed at selling hypnosis programs"
The book was okay in parts and resonated at some points, however the real help you need is once you have stopped drinking not helping you stop. The book offered little practical suggestions on how you ensure you continue not to drink and seemed to be aimed at just driving income for the author by way of you joining an expensive membership and purchasing hypnotic recordings
Left with the feeling that the book could have offered so much more -but didn't
Really opened my eyes! I for one will not be touching that poison anymore! I highly recommend it to anyone if they feel alcohol is in there life.
listened in 1 sitting
saw a lot of paralells and gave me a lot of hope
very well told and compulsively witty
"felt like a bit of a rip off of Allen Carr"
I did like this book and was easier then most self help books to listen too. I particularly liked the advice on health supplements to take. however parts of the book were incredibly similar to Allen Carrs book on alcohol.
"Definitely recommend this book."
As a 'Psychic Addiction' specialist (Be Psychic Free), I work with many people who suffer from anxiety about the future. Most of them drink in order to 'escape', albeit temporarily, from their problems and anxiety. Alcohol, of course, does not solve the anxiety issues, it is often the cause. This book came to me quite by chance, I am so glad it did, because it is going to be the first thing I recommend my clients to read. As a writer, how strange that I should be writing a chapter on the importance of self-care and looking after yourself physically, only to have this book appear. This should be recommended reading for all addiction specialists, life coaches, counsellors and therapists. An excellent resource.
"thank you for writing this book!!"
Thank you so for the last 3 weeks it's the longest time I've been sober over 30 years apart from when I;was pregnant, as soon as I read alcohol lied to me it happened my road to Damascus no heavenly light just a wonderful sense of I can bet this I can have my life back and I went out and brought the supplements you said would help and they have all I seem to have is a bit of a headache and a hangover feeling in the morning which is funny as I know I haven't had a drink and don't want one-My husband and children can't believe it we went out for .my two youngest birthday and I was drinking soder water and lime juice.
