"Matthiessen...is our greatest modern nature writer in the lyrical tradition." (The New York Times Book Review)
"Essential reading for everyone interested in wildlife and the preservation of endangered species." (Library Journal)
"Matthiessen is a great travel companion....His knowledge of...animals and people is breathtaking." (Boston Globe)
Matthiessen is one of the great writers of the last 30 years. Far Tortuga, The Snow Leopard, At Play in the Fields of the Lord are all masterpieces. Unfortunately Tigers in the Snow is an eco-potboiler, rehashing familiar arguments for conservation and laments about endangered species without taking us anywhere new. The writing feels humdrum and its easily possible to find more strongly felt expressions about the environment. Skip this one.
A difficult book to listen to, with all the geographical locations and tiger variety descriptions. So narrow in scope, written for specific interests. Very dry.
