Here, the man who started the "food revolution" with the million-plus-selling Diet for a New America, boldly posits that, collectively, our personal diet can save ourselves and the world. If, according to chaos theory, the beating of a butterfly's wing can cause a hurricane in another part of the world, try this out for chaotic cause and effect: monarch butterflies are dying in droves due to genetically-engineered corn growing in the Midwest. There is also a direct correlation between the Big Mac in your hand and the mile-wide river now running across the North Pole. Learn the truth about foods we are eating that are, in Robbins' words, "unsafe on any plate."

“The message is enough to scare you straight off processed foods.” (AudioFile)
“Well researched and lucidly written… this book is sure to spark discussion and incite readers to examine their food choices.” (Publishers Weekly)
“Those who want to know more about vegan diets will gain many insights from his provocative book.” (Library Journal)
The most amazing experience with this book was the eye-opening information on how we learn about health throughout our lives! If you want to live healthy and lose weight - READ THIS BOOK!
Another worthwhile book to read besides this one is The China Study
The Food Revolution inspired me to help the world by changing my own diet - it's incredible what an impact our own food choices have not only on our own health but the entire world and starving people on other parts of our planet!
Love, love, love, love this book!
It ranks at the top 3.
It works effectively as a precursor or a follow up to the The China Study by T. Collin Campbell.
Robbins brings more inflection and passion to his written words.
This book can and has changed lives for the better. There is so much going on in the food industry that the average person is not aware of. Robbins doesn't throw out glittering generalites. In the printed book, he presents his information and backs it with scientific findings from an exhaustive number of footnotes. This is important to note since you don't realize this just from the audio book alone. The information is solid and thankfully he is helping to heal the planet, one reader at a time.
This book is full of warnings I've heard throughout my life, but it's got them all packaged in 1 rhetorically charged combination. It definitely solidified some of my thoughts gm foods, and made me really re-think some of my other dietary choices.
Another great book on the myriad benefits of a whole foods plant based diet. I really wish this message would get out there more. The world would be a far better place. People would be dramatically healthier. The environment would substantially improve. And many millions of sentient intelligent animals would not spend their entire short lives in tortured misery.
Outstanding book. Highly recommended.
John Robbins literally turned his back on the lineage of the Baskin-Robbins Ice Cream fortune and carved a path of health for humanity. This is not a book on how to be vegan (or vegetarian, or whole food / plant based) but rather one that explores the ethics of food and food production. More philosophical than the works of Joel Fuhrman, T. Colin Campbell, etc, he asks the hard questions and calls us to listen to conscience rather that advocating a certain meal plan. Health issues aside, the Standard American Diet (SAD) is laden with substances than can compromise health rather than enhance it. While some of the info needs to be updated (the book is over 10 years old, published in 2001), the basic tenants remain. An excellent adjunct to the China Study, and other tomes about how to really improve health and vitality using foods that nurture rather than harm the body. Bravo, Mr. Robbins... keep up the good work!
Global citizen. Loves reading, but most of all traveling. If I cannot travel today, let me sit in sunshine and nature with a good book!
A must read for all!
Sometimes hard to hear, but a necessary education for all who eat!
It would be great to have some of the dates updated.
I loved it, a rare thing to say about a food and nutrition book. It was written with great passion.
John Robbins should be a hero and a mentor for all of us. He has pulled our heads out of the sand and removed us from among the ostriches of the world. As a physician, I am painfully aware of the deviations from natural lessons that have led to suffering, illness, and planetary injury. Thank you, John Robbins, for your example and determination. Whether you are vegan, paleo, or somewhere in between, you will be inspired and motivated by this book. At the very least, you will see what "largess" has cost us, and perhaps will adopt as your mantra, "all things in moderation".
Great book. Some of the voices were a bit robotic but I enjoyed it overall.
"Didn't manage to finish it"
Although I agree with the overall idea of the book, its a bit preachy & I don't agree that being a vegan is better for you than not, so I found this book a little difficult
