Publisher's summary

The Divided Mind is the crowning achievement of Dr. John E. Sarno's long and successful career as a groundbreaking medical pioneer. While his earlier books dealt almost exclusively with musculoskeletal pain disorders, here Dr. Sarno addresses the entire spectrum of psychosomatic (mind-body) disorders. In Dr. Sarno's view, the crucial interaction between the reasonable, rational, ethical, moral conscious mind and the repressed feelings of emotional pain, hurt, sadness, and anger characteristic of the unconscious mind is the basis for many mind-body disorders.

The Divided Mind traces the history of psychosomatic medicine, including Freud's crucial role as well as his failures. Most important, it describes the psychology of the human condition that is responsible for the broad range of psychosomatic illness. Dr. Sarno believes that the failure of medicine's practitioners to recognize and appropriately treat mind-body disorders has produced public health and economic problems of major proportions in the United States. One of the most interesting and important aspects of psychosomatic phenomena is the fact that knowledge and awareness of the process clearly have healing powers.

Critic reviews

"Dr. Sarno brilliantly explores the chasm between the conscious and unconscious minds, where psychosomatic ailments originate." (Mehmet Oz, M.D., co-author of You: The Owner's Manual)

Life changing.

This is not a typical honeymoon response to a newly proposed treatment. This is an unlocking of the mind that will leave you in a better place in life. The self awareness transfers into all areas of life. This book and Dr. Sarno’s theories should be taught to everyone. I have had two back surgeries and was headed down a terrible path. This process, although not always easy, has changed my life for the better. Thank you Dr. Sarno! R.I.P.

These mind body concepts are life changing!

I have been suffering for a few years from neck and lower back pain, within the first few chapters my body was releasing and beginning to heal. By the end of the book my life is transformed!

Best money you will ever spend X 100

This book will save your life and give it back to you, this also works for more than back pain, it works for any compulsive behavior, cured Howard Sterns OCS and my ravenous appetite and hoarding, believe it or not, as well as my intense shoulder pain and migraines, both gone for good so this book and Sarno's other book the mind body prescription are priceless

Read Dr. Sarno's other 2 books first

Any additional comments?

I have read all 3 of the books. This one is very advanced and contains analytical perspective that would be lost on most without the prior books. Full of amazing case studies, some of which are very intense and are not for the soft at heart. Sarno is a genius and he shares his knowledge of 50+ years of his observations. I can not imagine what that would be worth $$ wise.

This is the way we will look at health issues in the future

This is an astounding book filled with information about healing physical pain. It incidentally leads you into a happier sense of well-being too. That we can begin this pain-free journey on our own and without huge cost makes this work empowering and so valuable.

When the medical fraternity wakes up and lets go of their “investment” in themselves and their egos, this treatment will revolutionize health all over the world. And save us a huge amount of money that could be better spent in other areas.

Listen to the interview first

I wish I had listen to the interview first. Gives much better context to the material.

Start with the interview at the end

Really insightful book. At some times boring, but so glad I took the time to get through it. I have a totally different perspective on what’s going on with me now.

The last chapter is a great interview with Dr Sarno. I would start there, it’s a fantastic overview of his work.

Fascinating!

I find this book fascinating. I think John Sarno is on to something. I think explains so many of the “mystery illnesses” that my family deals with. They are really explained by the emotional trauma we went through as children. Now, I hope I can find the power to conquer my health challenges by healing my mind. I’m working on it. It’s not easy, but there is hope. This book is super helpful for anyone who deals with chronic pain that can’t be explained and/or helped by modern medicine. Stop putting a band aid on your problems and stop them from the root cause. Awesome!

Absolutely true

I first came across Sarno’s original book when I was dealing with a back pain issue. I read it, saw myself in the pages, wrote a list of things in my life that could make “someone” rageful and my pain disappeared. Years later, I have some other issues going on. Hadn’t thought about Dr. Sarno
