Today as much as 10 percent of the population of the United States suffers from chronic pain. It is more widespread, misdiagnosed, and undertreated than any major disease. While recent research has shown that pain produces pathological changes to the brain and spinal cord, many doctors and patients still labor under misguided cultural notions and outdated scientific dogmas.

Historia
Am I happy enough? This has been a pivotal question since America's inception. "Am I not happy enough because I am depressed?" is a more recent version. Psychotherapist Gary Greenberg shows how depression has been manufactured---not as an illness but as an idea about our suffering, its source, and its relief. He challenges us to look at depression in a new way.

Historia
Trauma is a fact of life. Veterans and their families deal with the painful aftermath of combat; one in five Americans has been molested; one in four grew up with alcoholics; one in three couples have engaged in physical violence. Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, one of the world’s foremost experts on trauma, has spent more than three decades working with survivors. In The Body Keeps the Score, he uses recent scientific advances to show how trauma literally reshapes both body and brain, compromising sufferers’ capacities for pleasure, engagement, self-control, and trust.

America has been the world leader in generating new mental health treatments and modern theories of the human psyche. We export our psychopharmaceuticals packaged with the certainty that our biomedical knowledge will relieve the suffering and stigma of mental illness. We categorize disorders, thereby defining mental illness and health, and then parade these seemingly scientific certainties in front of the world.

On average, a physician will interrupt a patient describing her symptoms within 12 seconds. In that short time, many doctors decide on the likely diagnosis and best treatment. Often, decisions made this way are correct, but at crucial moments they can also be wrong: with catastrophic consequences. In this myth-shattering book, Jerome Groopman pinpoints the forces and thought processes behind the decisions doctors make.

Dr. Rankin discovered the health care she had been taught was missing something: a recognition of the body’s innate ability to self-repair. Using cases of spontaneous healing, Dr. Rankin shows how thoughts, feelings, and beliefs can alter the body’s physiology. She lays out the data proving that loneliness, pessimism, depression, fear, and anxiety damage the body, while intimate relationships, gratitude, meditation, sex, and authentic self-expression flip on the body’s self-healing processes.

great information, robot narrator
this book is incredible. it described so much in great detail with a writer who is obviously very experienced in his field. it's very compassionate and honest and goes into depth in ways that I didn't expect. there's a lot of discussion about feelings and facing them. surprising!
however, the narrator is robotic. no warmth, just clinical reading. it's a drawback because he just reads every single word at exactly the same Pace without pause or without inflection. It's easy to not listen because there is no emotional tone whatsoever to what he's reading.

A great subject with a mediocre presentation
Would you listen to The Mindbody Prescription again? Why?
I would listen to it again, as the examples in the book help with the healing process, and there's a lot of information that's difficult to process in the first listening.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Reading the book completely obliterated 10 years worth of pain, the only word I can use to describe it is 'incredible'

Listen to this book it will change your life!
Would you listen to The Mindbody Prescription again? Why?
Yes, I am going for my second time around listening and I will continue to listen to it until the concepts are second nature. It is healing just to listen to the concepts of this book. I noticed a change within. Dr Sarno's scientific pedigree gives enormous weight to his scientific findings. He guides the listener by the hand through biological and anatomical concepts. This book is a real gem!
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Mindbody Prescription?
That I have the power to heal myself. That emotions, though intrinsic to living, important and necessary, if they are out of balance can be very toxic.
Which scene was your favorite?
The exercises to begin healing the mind and body
What did you learn from The Mindbody Prescription that you would use in your daily life?
To become aware of the physiology of emotions and their effect on the body structures.
Any additional comments?
Dr Sarno continue to write please. We need to change the outmoded concepts of orthodox medicine

What made the experience of listening to The Mindbody Prescription the most enjoyable?
Excellent, book, excellent work! Dr. Sarno is a saint! Through his amazing work, identifying TMS he has changed, is changing and will change the life's of so many people that are suffering unnecessarily because of societies erroneous beliefs about unifying mind and body i.e. the link between emotions and disease. This is the kind of thing that doctors should be taught at medical school. A must read!

A must-read/listen for anyone with chronic pain!
A challenging yet profound and scientifically sound approach to chronic pain relief! Dr. Sarno's views are challenging and often counter-intuitive, yet his deep understanding of the symptomatology and effects of most of these chronic conditions are far more in-depth than most doctors and experts. His root cause analysis of these factors invites the reader to contemplate them simply and repeatedly. Very soothing, deep, and worth rereading many times to let it permeate. A masterpiece, and top 5 health books in my collection!
