Publisher's summary

Leonard Mlodinow, the best-selling author of The Drunkard’s Walk and coauthor of The Grand Design (with Stephen Hawking), gives us a startling and eye-opening examination of how the unconscious mind shapes our experience of the world and how, for instance, we often misperceive our relationships with family, friends, and business associates, misunderstand the reasons for our investment decisions, and misremember important events.

Your preference in politicians, the amount you tip your waiter - all judgments and perceptions reflect the workings of our mind on two levels: the conscious, of which we are aware, and the unconscious, which is hidden from us. The latter has long been the subject of speculation, but over the past two decades researchers have developed remarkable new tools for probing the hidden, or subliminal, workings of the mind. The result of this explosion of research is a new science of the unconscious and a sea change in our understanding of how the subliminal mind affects the way we live.

Employing his trademark wit and lucid, accessible explanations of the most obscure scientific subjects, Leonard Mlodinow takes us on a tour of this research, unraveling the complexities of the subliminal self and increasing our understanding of how the human mind works and how we interact with friends, strangers, spouses, and coworkers. In the process he changes our view of ourselves and the world around us.

Terrific

Bridges the theories of the unconscious mind to actual science. This is a great primer on the emerging science of the unconscious mind.

Interesting read

This book was presented a little differently than other "brain science" books I have read, at times making it easier. It had both science and a nice bit of humor. The reader was a tiny bit dry, but I found the writing interesting enough to overlook the slightly monotone sound in his voice. I feel I would have done far worse myself. I've ordered the paperback to read and make reference notes in.

great information, but lacking a ”so what?”

I enjoyed listening to this book. it presented a lot of interesting information. what I could not find was a way to apply it to leadership in a large organization. I would have preferred if the author took these theories and then connected it to ways of implementing the ideas to better an organization.

Good, but I expected more

1- He reads too fast and some words are not very clear (English isn't my first language though)
2- I would rather to learn about more recent studies and findings about our subliminal, even though I am not familiar with the more basic stuff
3- it is not clear how he prioritized the topics that are covered here. Why he thinks these are the most important ones?

the power of your hidden mind

I read this after being introduced to Mlodinow's science in the Drunkards Walk. Here too are fascinating explorations baked by numerous experiments, this time exploring how our own minds secretly mess with us. The guidance however is still positive, toward accepting the boost in self confidence that allows us to believe in ourselves when we most need to.
