Reed Timmer is one of the most successful and most extreme storm chasers in the world. His is a job that requires science and bravado, knowledge and instinct just to survive, never mind excel. It's a job some people would kill for. But most prefer to let Timmer take the risks while they watch from the safety of their homes.
Reed Timmer is a star of Storm Chasers, one of the Discovery Channel's top-rated shows. Into the Storm is Timmer's dramatic account of his extraordinary profession. Each chapter features the story of one of the 300-plus extreme tornadoes, hurricanes, or blizzards that Timmer has intercepted over the last decade - storms that include the killer F5 tornado that struck Moore, Oklahoma, in May 1999; the unprecedented, devastating storm surge of Hurricane Katrina; and the little-studied but enormously powerful storm systems in places like Canada and Argentina, including a recent trip in which Timmer realized he was the only storm chaser in South America and was able to intercept super cells in the most prolific hail-producing region in the world.
As a Ph.D. candidate in meteorology, Timmer is after more than just an adrenaline rush - his stories feature fascinating insights into the science of storms and how the data he is collecting will someday save lives. With a firsthand perspective on the storm-chasing community, Timmer also takes listeners inside this world, examining his controversial obsession and the ethical debates it sparks.
Featuring the same you-are-there immediacy that attracts more than 100,000 visitors to Timmer's Web site every month, Into the Storm is one wild - and informative - ride.

After 15 years in Motorsport I now work in Public Broadcast.
If my friend was interested in more of the meteorological elements of storm chasing this is the right book. There are some good behind the scenes descriptions and some more personal information.
I say MIGHT in the heading because there are many times throughout the book that the science takes over. The reading is traditional Reed Timmer and is pretty flat throughout. If you want a book to pass the time and perhaps pick up some useful information this is the listen for you.
I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to be a storm chaser.
It was an interesting read and kept my attention. Give some background as to why they storm chase. Gave some very helpful hints as to what to expect during and after a Tornado. Not full of techno babble and easy to understand.
This will probably be a short review, but it's just flat out and to the point. How can you be a fan of weather without being a fan of Reed Timmer??? This box is just absolutely awesome! It was the soul reason that I even signed up for Audible. I HAD TO HAVE this book.
Weather” you watch Discovery Channel’s “Storm Chasers” or “Weather” you don’t there is very little chance that you will be able to pick up this book & then put it back down. If you do happen to watch “Storm Chasers” you will recognize Reed Timmer as the energetic & animated meteorologist/videographer in the burgundy “Dominator” storm chase vehicle.
Reed, as you will learn in this book is much more than an enthusiastic adrenaline junkie out for a fix. He chases for the science & the knowledge that is obtained by his adventures in the pursuit of his elusive prey, the tornado.
Reed is obviously a very intelligent young man with many hunts still to go. His prey is the cyclonic warriors that attack Middle America each year & every year & rarely do they not take a life. In his efforts, Reed is not only trying to capture the powerful beasts on his video camera as they move across the grasslands, farmlands & wooded areas of the continent but he is also gathering previously unretrievable data that will be used to protect property but more importantly lives.
This book will guide you through what drives him to make the next journey & it will show you the seeds that were sewn early in his life that kept him on the path that he has found to be fulfilling and exciting. As you read this you will find yourself in the back seat of the car wondering if you should close your eyes or open them to see these monsters take you with him. You're getting an education as well. Reed explains the ingredients that make for the perfect storms & he explains how your own previous weather observations make up both the dangerous & the spectacular.
What I enjoyed the least about the book was the end. Because I chose the audio version from Audible.com, I was surprised when it was all over as I could not see the pages waning as the book was coming to a close. I want more.
You will read the passion and compassion Reed has for his interests and the people they effect and assist.
A MUST READ
