Publisher's summary

This landmark book is for those of us who prefer words to equations; this is the story of the ultimate quest for knowledge, the ongoing search for the secrets at the heart of time and space. Its author, Stephen W. Hawking, is arguably the greatest mind since Einstein. From the vantage point of the wheelchair, where he has spent the last 20 years trapped by Lou Gehrig's disease, Professor Hawking has transformed our view of the universe. A Brief History of Time is Hawking's classic introduction to today's most important scientific ideas about the cosmos. It is read here by the Emmy Award-winning host of The Michael Jackson Show on KABC-TV.

Critic reviews

"A masterful summary of what physicists now think the world is made of and how it got that way." (The Wall Street Journal)
"Lively and provocative, Hawking clearly possesses a natural teacher's gift, easy, good-natured humor, and an ability to illustrate highly complex propositions with analogies plucked from daily life." (The New York Times)

Great information, but it's technical

Michael Jackson does a great job with Stephen Hawking's writings. However, this is a book on astrophysics - You can easily get lost listening to the details. If you're not interested in learning about the nature of the universe down to the quantum level, this is probably not the book for you.

Makes physics accessible

Where does A Brief History of Time rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

First physics book and Stephen Hawking book I've ever read. Really enjoyed the listen. Thought it did a really good job in explaining some pretty difficult concepts in an understandable way.

Any additional comments?

The book makes me more interested in Stephen Hawking and physics theory.

Great book with awesome narrator

Even though English is my second language, I really enjoyed this book. It gave a good perspective on the universe, quantum physics and the interaction of time and space. The book was incredibly well narrated by Michael Jackson. It felt alive, and if I didn't know better I would have thought it was Mr. Hawking himself that read it!

Amazing book, and well read

I loved the reading of this amazing book! Michael Jackson reads it so well that it sounds like Prof Hawking were reading it himself without the inhibition of ALS. Emphasis added in all the right places.

Gets complicated fast

The book starts out very interesting describing the universe in layman‘s terms. But then about midway through the book, it becomes quite complicated and difficult to understand. And then, at the end of the book, it gets a little bit easier again. And the review of scientists in history was very interesting also.

Fantastic Book

A must read for anyone who has interest or wants a broader understanding of physics, philosophy, or a foundation to better understand life as we perceive it. Written so that anyone (myself for example) who has been out of school for years and still grasp and build on the theories discussed throughout the book.

Missing chapter 10

This audiobook skips chapter 10 “wormholes and time travel.” Although it is listed in the chapters, it only reads aloud chapter 11
