Publisher's summary

In Chicago, someone has been killing practitioners of magic, those incapable of becoming full-fledged wizards. Shockingly, all the evidence points to Harry Dresden's half brother, Thomas, as the murderer. Determined to clear his sibling's name, Harry uncovers a conspiracy within the White Council of Wizards that threatens not only him, but his nearest and dearest, too.

Critic reviews

“What’s not to like about this series?...It takes the best elements of urban fantasy, mixes it with some good old-fashioned noir mystery, tosses in a dash of romance and a lot of high-octane action, shakes, stirs, and serves.” (SF Site)

“A tricky plot complete with against-the-clock pacing, firefights, explosions, and plenty of magic. Longtime series fans as well as newcomers drawn by the SciFi Channel’s TV series based on the novels should find this supernatural mystery a real winner.” (Library Journal)

“What would you get if you crossed Spenser with Merlin? Probably you would come up with someone very like Harry Dresden, wizard, tough guy and star of [the Dresden Files].” (The Washington Times)

Love the story and the reader is fantastic. I will listen to whatever book the performer reads.

Love them all

I have gone through about 7 books in the last 5 weeks. The narrator is awesome and of course Jim butcher is amazing. Can’t wait to get through the next one!

Great Book

I'd forgotten how much stuff happens in this book; the follow-up that the girl Marcone visited Helen's (from one of the first books) daughter, being rid of Lash, etc.

There was also a lot of foreshadowing I don't think I picked up on for things forthcoming; the mention of Persephone & Hades, Marcone becoming a signatory of the accords and Harry suggesting and helping with that.

3rd best so far

Obviously, if you are reading a review for the ninth book of this series you are most likely already hooked and are going to continue reading. In my opinion this is his 3rd best book so far (up to 9), first being #7 dead beat (gotta love butters) and second being #8 proven guilty (charity had a great character arc), but I for one need to take a break from series’ every now and then, so some other books I would recommend if you like the Dresden Files would be
-arcane ascension (sufficiently advanced magic)
- the king killer chronicles (name of the wind)
- and to be honest, not too similar to Dresden, but I love anything written by Brandon Sanderson (start with Mistborn the final empire)

Oh and just if you are wondering, this time he fights ghouls. #1 Warlocks, #2 werewolves, #3 ghosts, #4 fey, #5 demons, #6 vampires, #7 zombies, #8 nightmares, and #9 ghouls

narration and author.

This great story and a great storyteller makes this book hard to put down. It's thrilling to see each character grow and adapt.

Good book, not so good editing

I love the Dresden books & was pleased to find them on audio. I am wondering why they're being released in reverse order though.

Also, you will find two spots at the end of ch 1 and the middle of 2 where the audio skips. It's confusing if you haven't read the books. Here is what's missing

1) Harry finds the Bible verse 'suffer not a witch to live' written in a magical nature, obviously meant for him to find.

2) Molly has hidden herself under a veil and has followed Harry & Murphy to the crime scene. Murphy catches her.
