Publisher's summary

Zombies are real. And we made them. Are you prepared for the zombie apocalypse? The Smith family is, with the help of a few marines.

When an airborne "zombie" plague is released, bringing civilization to a grinding halt, the Smith family, Steven, Stacey, Sophia, and Faith, take to the Atlantic to avoid the chaos. The plan is to find a safe haven from the anarchy of infected humanity. What they discover, instead, is a sea composed of the tears of survivors and a passion for bringing hope.

For it is up to the Smiths and a small band of Marines to somehow create the refuge that survivors seek in a world of darkness and terror. Now with every continent a holocaust and every ship an abattoir, life is lived under a graveyard sky.

Great start to a fantastic series!

This book is the start of a terrific series starting with one man and his family’s attempt to navigate what turns out to be essentially a zombie apocalypse, and winds up being the key to save you the entire world! Well the main character is entertaining in his own right, it is his daughter Faith, who steals the show! A new twist on the zombie apocalypse and a great listen at that!

loved the book

great end of world plot with realistic non magical zombies. Even the science behind the zombies holds up reasonably well.

A really good, and unique EOTWAWKI story.

A lot of complaints kept me from purchasing for a while, but I finally did simply because I wanted to start the series (the rest of which is reviewed well) and Ringo's cred with me is solid. I enjoy long-running zombie and similar series that let you see the long game. Good prepper stuff at the beginning which makes up for a relatively slow start. One of the main characters is a bit over the top as some of the complaints state, but I found the concept of the biggest bad ass in the story being the 13 yo daughter entertaining. Definitely worth the credit for me. If you enjoy horror with heroes that actually fight back and a healthy does of military theme you'll think so too.

Not Ringo's best work

Maybe its because some of his other works have been so great that this one just pales in comparison. Or maybe the idea of 13 year old being a one man errr women killing machine is a bit harder to suspend the disbelief.

A different take on the ZA

This was a great listen, I've listened to so many different zombie books and a lot are very similar but this one sets itself apart from the others in a number of ways. First the zombies aren't the usual living dead though they act about the same but in a more believable way. Second, they go out on a boat instead of the normal drift across the land story that I'm used to. I'm currently about 30 minutes from finishing it, I just bought the second installment so I can listen to it when this is done. If I had to find any fault with it I'd say the 13 yr old daughter may be a bit far fetched in her abilities and knowledge of weapons and such but I suppose it's just as possible as a zombie apocalypse.
