Publisher's summary

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • In the fourth novel of the Iron Druid Chronicles, two-thousand-year-old Druid Atticus O’Sullivan must pay his debts to cunning trickster god Coyote, a task that includes battling undead creatures of the night as well as a relentless hound of Hel and the goddess of death who commands it.

“[Kevin] Hearne is a terrific storyteller with a great snarky wit. . . . Neil Gaiman’s American Gods meets Jim Butcher’s Harry Dresden.”—SFFWorld

Cutting a deal with a trickster god rarely goes well for any human brave or foolish enough to try it, but Atticus doesn’t feel like he has a choice. With members of the Norse pantheon out for his blood, he can’t train his apprentice in peace, so he asks Coyote to help him fake his own death. The cost, however, might wind up being every bit as high as if he’d made no deal at all.

There are things hiding in the Arizona desert that don’t want any company, and Coyote makes sure they know Atticus has arrived. And then there's the hound of Hel, Garm, who’s terribly difficult to shake and not at all convinced that Atticus is dead.

Being tricked by a trickster is par for the course. But it’s the betrayal from someone he thought was a friend that shakes Atticus to the core and places his life in jeopardy. The real trick, he discovers, might be surviving his own faked death.

Includes Kevin Hearne’s novella “Two Ravens and One Crow”

Never trust a smiling Coyote

Karma is an interesting thing. Atticus has ticked off a lot of different deities and many other worldly beings so it would make sense that he would be wary of their attention, but wouldn't it also make sense to be wary of agreeing to help someone called a "trickster"? One would think. Atticus - Atticus...have you learned nothing?

As usual, the next story in this series draws you into a fun and exciting story that has twists and turns and Oberon-witicisms...and so many mentions of breakfast meat products that I was hungry for a good portion of the book. (ha) The story moves at a good pace so you never feel that you are getting mired in fluff or trivial things. And just when you think you can take a minute to catch your breath, something else happens that makes you want to punch a certain character in a black hat and blue jeans right in the mouth. (smirk)

I am big fan of this series of books, and of this narrator specifically. He is able to voice the numerous characters in such a way that you always know who is speaking at any one time. The storyline is clear, but has enough curve balls thrown in to keep you wanting more and wishing you could spend more time in your car so you hear the next chapter.

ENJOY!!

Great read / listen

Love the whole series, Kevin Hearne does a great job of creating a detailed setting. There is a lot of humor, but not quite comedy, along with great bits of mythology from all pantheons. Most definitely read this series.
Luke Daniels is a really really great narrator, he really breathes life into these characters.

Consequences

This book is filled with consequences from the previous actions of the Iron Druid. This takes what could have been just another entry into the series and really gives it a bit of hot sauce. Well done.

Accents Drove Me Nuts

If you’ve listened to books by Kevin Hearne before, how does this one compare?

I am enjoying this series during my commute. I live in the southwest, so I like the series planting little seeds of adventure and magic into a setting like the one I am driving through. But this is why it drove me nuts how off-base the accents were, particularly Coyote's. When he showed up before, it was a mild irritation that this "Navajo" deity sounded like a white man from the American South (i.e. a character from the Sookie Stackhouse series), because he only showed up for small windows of time. In this book, he comes and goes, dragging that wildly inappropriate accent around with him, and with the added bonus of an inability to correctly pronounce the Navajo last names of other characters. Ugh. Perhaps this was not troubling to other readers, but as someone who is Native American and Southwestern, and who interacts with Navajos on a daily basis, this was completely cringe-worthy.

I guess I should just be glad that Atticus stopped trying to sound like Coyote. I never understood how Atticus could interact with international pantheons of gods with perfect dignity, but when it came to the Native American ones, he suddenly affected a southern drawl, somehow in deference to them.

Seriously. WTF.

Love this series.

What made the experience of listening to Tricked the most enjoyable?

The narrator is amazing. He makes each character come alive and the word pictures are just perfect. I love Oberon! Cannot wait for the next adventure!

Have you listened to any of Luke Daniels???s other performances before? How does this one compare?

All of them - they are all equally wonderful. You must read them in order or you will miss the story.
