Publisher's summary

In the fifth novel in the New York Times bestselling Iron Druid Chronicles, two-thousand-year-old Druid Atticus O’Sullivan will at last bind a new Druid to protect the earth—but first he must go toe-to-toe with the Roman god Bacchus, the Norse pantheon, and an ancient vampire, all hell-bent on ensuring his demise.

“[Kevin] Hearne is a terrific storyteller with a great snarky wit. . . . Neil Gaiman’s American Gods meets Jim Butcher’s Harry Dresden.”—SFFWorld

The downside to faking your own death is that people tend to get upset when they find out they’ve been had. In Atticus O’Sullivan’s case, they’re upset enough to come after him to make sure he dies for real this time. Yet he can’t remain in hiding anymore: He has to bind his apprentice, Granuaile, to the earth so that she can become the first new Druid in centuries.

But the Roman god Bacchus wants mortal revenge for a slight against him, and he proceeds to act on the principle that Atticus should hate his life until it can be ended. Members of the Norse pantheon aren’t particularly pleased with Atticus either—especially one who had languished in darkness, slowly going mad, and is now free to work his mischief again.

On top of that, an ancient vampire, who’d like to remove Atticus and Granuaile as threats to his kind, is working on his own plan for their destruction.

Forced to work at the base of Mount Olympus, Atticus and Granuaile must survive the three-month process of her binding and escape the many traps set for them. It’s fortunate that they have Oberon the Irish Wolfhound on their side—but is one good dog going to be enough to see them through it?

Critic reviews

"It may be possible that Hearne and Atticus are the logical heir to Butcher and Dresden." (SFFWorld)

“Celtic mythology and an ancient Druid with modern attitude mix it up in the Arizona desert in this witty new fantasy series.” (Kelly Meding, author of Chimera)

“A page-turning and often laugh-out-loud funny caper through a mix of the modern and the mythic.” (Ari Marmell, author of The Warlord’s Legacy)

Good as always

Still pretty good. Story line is entertaining. Dialog is clear. Reader does good voices and impersonations. I need another word

SOOOOO Glad it didn't turn into the Granuaile show

Any additional comments?

Standard serving of awesomeness! There was a point where the story got a bit confusing. Too many enemies out to get Atticus for even his paranoia to account for!! Hearne did a good job of weaving the plot back together though. I was concerned about how the end of Granuaile's apprenticeship was going to play out, but it wasn't horribly painful. I have to say I don't like her character. She is very flat, not much personality. There isn't any real chemistry between her and Atticus, no witty repartee. Very little spark to her dialogue or actions. Perhaps its just the way that Daniels performs this character. I don't think I will like the remaining books in the series if they focus more on her. Oberon is all the side kick that Atticus needs. Granuaile adds nothing to the story. Thank the LORD they don't get too much into the love interest part of their relationship.

Still a great series ,But..

I am uncertain if the two Novela were an integral part of the series or not. This book was all fight and little plot expansion. as I see it, these books are all worth the time and pleasure.

Good story, author is petty. Perfect performance!

I really enjoy the story. The performance, is as always, the very best by Luke Daniels. I find few narrators who can match him. I do have a few complaints with Kevin Hearne. For one, he trashed some of the religions of the Gods he uses. And, out of fear no doubt, steers completely away from any of the Muslim pantheons. Why cannot these authors write without trashing things they do not agree with, really? Leave your personal opinions out of it, because it make it indisputable you are petty! Otherwise very enjoyable.

I swear...

I feel like I have a love/hate relationship with Atticus.

I say this because even though he knows he's fucked up and has somehow managed to fix it.... he still want to put another damn blade in the healed wound.

My dude, you need to stop being so damn quick to shoot yourself in the foot.

I loved the story as usual. this one was a bit of a drag and seemed to go back and forth with the Tom and Jerrying of the chase for the druids. Still overall enjoyable. Let's see what kind of shenanigans they get into this time!

Luke Daniels is nothing short of my voiceover hero. How he manages to distinguish male/female nicely where it's not grating and accents where it's like, "Who the fuck let this happen?" is always a delight to listen to! 10/10 on the delivery, brava! He's become an inspiration to become a better narrator/voiceover myself! Keep it up, Luke!!!

so punny

listened to the books 1-7 about 4x now, still not tired of it. Kevin Hearne is quite funny. Luke Daniels got skillz, his voices and accents are off the chain! I just wish audible made the in between books cheaper
