What do you do when everything you've ever known is ripped away from you, leaving nothing but ashes and charred memories behind? You get angry. So very angry.
Malwynn and his twin sister, Umaryn, live in a small town in Northern Varrland. In idyllic New Picknell nearly nothing happens, and when their day-to-day routine is interrupted by a skirmish between an invading patrol of the dead from The Amaranth Empire and a defending force from Varrland, their world begins to come undone. With international war looming on the horizon, New Picknell becomes the center of quite unwanted attention, and the twins have their world shattered. With nothing left to lose, they set out on a mission of vengeance that will take them to places they'd never dreamed of visiting, discovering mystical powers in The Way that will change their lives forever, and revealing dark knowledge best left undiscovered.
The Wrath of the Orphans and the world of Elmoryn are filled with elements of dark horror, steampunk, and sorcery. It is an ancient world filled with heroes of immeasurable valor and ancient secrets tearing at the past to be known again. Written by the author of the Internet phenomenon Adrian's Undead Diary, The Wrath of the Orphans is the first book in a sprawling dark fantasy epic trilogy that is sure to thrill, charm, and disturb.

Following Umaryn and Malwyn as they seek revenge "The Wrath of the Orphans" takes a touch of fantasy and a touch of lovecraftian influence make for a great story. I've been waiting rather impatiently for this book to come to audio and wasn't disappointed. Kevin Collins did a great job narrating and already wonderful book. I can't wait to hear the rest.
Tough question...I'm a fan of the story and the content but the narrator wasn't my favorite. The narrator who reads the "Adrian's Undead Diary" series by the same author reads in a very relaxed and natural way. This narrator made it feel forced and it almost detracts from the story. Fortunately the story itself was strong, original and entertaining which is all that really mattered.
They're twins! How can you pick one? Malwynn and Umaryn's world was turned upside down. They have lost everything and will stop at nothing to find answers and vengeance at almost any cost. Both very deep and you will find yourself emotionally attached quickly, cheering them on at every turn.
The story opens with a bang that will catch your attention immediately and quickly draws you into the story. Because of the great intrigue alone, that is probably one of my favorites. It slows a bit from there but the payoff is well worth it. I'm very anti-spoiler so I'll just leave it at that.
What would you do if everything you've ever known was ripped away?
This is a very deep, complex story that will satisfy even those who are not a huge fan of the genre like myself. Philbrook is an amazing author. This is not one to be missed!
The characters and settings were well developed.
The big showdown of course.
Umaryn, I always love the moral compasses.
There were a few heart pounding moments and a few tears for love lost.
I can't wait to read the rest of the series. Chris Philbrook is a promising author and I hope there is much more to come from him.
I liked it so much I listened to it 3 times back to back. It took me until a couple of chapters in on my first listen to warm up to the narrator, but I got into the cadence of his performance and he does a great job of giving different voices and accents to the characters so that you always knows who is speaking.
The story has a good pace and keeps you wanting to find out what happens next. I am very excited for the release of the second book in the series. Also a nice bonus is that at the end of the book, after the credits, you get to listen to the first chapter of the second book.
This book opened up a new universe where everything ever dreamt can come to pass. The good but most importantly the bad.
This book will pull at your emotion's, you will feel anger and loss, and more importantly fear.
This series has a little bit of everything in it. What we would call magic, zombies, and even "The Force" although none of them by name of course. This is a great revenge story.
The determination of the brother and sister is just amazing. The twist and turns it's amazing they trusted anyone at all. I am looking to read the second one. Great author and narrator, I would reccomend. Good job.

Dear Chris Philbrook: I love you! You have fast becoming my favorite author! I am amazed by how you you can give me so many times in a book that I wanted to read the END so I could continue reading the next book. Kevin really reads this as a pro, and gives it the voice it needs!
I can wait to see where this goes, Chris Philbrook has done well here. I want to know more about the setting. also I enjoy how at the moment I thought were loop holes were resolved later

coming-of-age meets revenge.

I like interesting world-building, and Wrath of the Orphans has it. The magic system isn't super complicated, but it's clear and logical. The settings were well-drawn and the nations, religions, etc all make sense. The blend of (post-apocalyptic?) science and magic was also intriguing. The plot isn't spectacular, being a coming-of-age/revenge quest with intrigue and moral ambiguities, but it moved along well, it was enjoyable and the character's actions didn't really make me suspend disbelief. The narration was very good and consistent throughout. I would definitely consider spending a credit on book 2, which is high praise for a freeby book.
