Day two: the wise man’s fear

“There are three things all wise men fear: the sea in storm, a night with no moon, and the anger of a gentle man.”

My name is Kvothe. You may have heard of me.

So begins a tale told from his own point of view - a story unequaled in fantasy literature. Now in The Wise Man’s Fear, Day Two of The Kingkiller Chronicle, Kvothe takes his first steps on the path of the hero and learns how difficult life can be when a man becomes a legend in his own time.

Not just another day: listen to more in the Kingkiller Chronicles.

Critic reviews

"Narrator Nick Podehl arrives at the end of this long audiobook, the second in the Kingkiller series, as engaged and fresh as he was at the start.... Podehl adeptly presents the broad cast of characters - from moneylenders and courtesans to kings. One of the most fascinating portrayals by Podehl begins with a young mercenary from the Adem who says little. And when he does speak, he has a flat voice, mostly devoid of expression. Podehl builds on this when Kvothe returns with him to study among the Adem, where the mercenary develops a recognizable pattern of speech reflecting many of the culture's characteristics." “The best epic fantasy I read last year.... He’s bloody good, this Rothfuss guy.”
(George R. R. Martin, New York Times-bestselling author of A Song of Ice and Fire)

“Rothfuss has real talent, and his tale of Kvothe is deep and intricate and wondrous.” (Terry Brooks, New York Times-bestselling author of Shannara)

"It is a rare and great pleasure to find a fantasist writing...with true music in the words." (Ursula K. Le Guin, award-winning author of Earthsea)

I felt the relationships

Overall a great coaster behind the eyes of a believable character torn between ego of accomplishment and duty to those wronged. The chapters do not match up and that is annoying but the story and performance was to notch.

SO. DAM. GOOD.

This book was unbelievably enchanting to listen to. Like any other book, there were still portions that seemed to lull but the story would pick right back up and drag you to the edge of your seat again. Please sir, may I have some more.

My back book, well presented

I've read this book and enjoyed it so much I go it again ad an audio book. I enjoyed is just a s much if not more the second time. at first I was unsure about the reader, he seemed young and I wasn't sure if he was any good. now that I've listened to both books I think he is perfect. the reader really captures just how young Kvoth is and makes it feel like you are sitting in the inn with him as he recites his story.

A real cliff hanger master :)

It's not often I have been as fascinated by a book as I was with The Wise Man's Fear. The 40+ hours went in a snap and after two weeks it was over, but what a trip. Nick Podehl is really great when it comes to the narrating and gives every character their own soul.

Rothfuss is also a great cliff hanger writer and just "one more" chapter or "10 more minutes" never really worked as it was always something happening.

A real joy to listen to :)

Entertaining Tale in a Rich World

This is the second book and continues the tale of Kvothe. The characters are compelling and after reading the first book I found myself anticipating and feeling for them as they (not just the main character) try to live their lives. The author does a good job in telling his story employing a 1st person narrative for most of the book when Kvothe is telling the tale.

The story is not perfect, you may catch yourself wondering if the Kvothe is being perfectly honest or embellishing as the tale sometimes drifts towards a dramatic solution where simple responses, using abilities seen earlier would have helped. As with any 1st person narrative, it is good to remember the person telling the tale is not perfect. In this case quite passionate.

The plot is unfolding delightfully and is very enjoyable to follow along. This is a good thing given how long it is. The performer does a good job. Nick Podehl has a long list of characters to portray. His accents, for the most part, are enjoyable to hear and he conveys emotions well.

The best I can say about this book is I was sorry to see it come to an end. Every chapter is as enjoyable as the last and I wait eagerly for the next book in the series.

Wonderful!

LOVE this book. I got addicted to it and would listen when I should be doing other thins. If you liked the Game of Thrones series, you would love this one too. Nick Podehl does a great job reading the book. I felt like I was part of the story. I find myself thinking about the series, longing to read the next book (which hasnt be released yet).

Shortest 40+ hours of your life....

I tore through both books in this series in a matter of days. It has been a long time since I have listened to anything quite as engaging as this series. My overall impression of Mr. Rothfuss is that the guy is clearly one very smart dude and doesn't mind everyone knowing it.

It did have a couple slow points for me but it never quite slipped into boring.

I can not wait for book 3!!!
