My name is Kvothe. You may have heard of me.

So begins a tale told from his own point of view - a story unequaled in fantasy literature. Now in The Wise Man’s Fear, Day Two of The Kingkiller Chronicle, Kvothe takes his first steps on the path of the hero and learns how difficult life can be when a man becomes a legend in his own time.

Critic reviews

"Narrator Nick Podehl arrives at the end of this long audiobook, the second in the Kingkiller series, as engaged and fresh as he was at the start.... Podehl adeptly presents the broad cast of characters - from moneylenders and courtesans to kings. One of the most fascinating portrayals by Podehl begins with a young mercenary from the Adem who says little. And when he does speak, he has a flat voice, mostly devoid of expression. Podehl builds on this when Kvothe returns with him to study among the Adem, where the mercenary develops a recognizable pattern of speech reflecting many of the culture's characteristics." “The best epic fantasy I read last year.... He’s bloody good, this Rothfuss guy.”
(George R. R. Martin, New York Times-bestselling author of A Song of Ice and Fire)

“Rothfuss has real talent, and his tale of Kvothe is deep and intricate and wondrous.” (Terry Brooks, New York Times-bestselling author of Shannara)

"It is a rare and great pleasure to find a fantasist writing...with true music in the words." (Ursula K. Le Guin, award-winning author of Earthsea)

Good, but not as good as the first book

An entertaining book, not quite as enthralling as The Name of the Wind. Even though this book is much longer, I think there are more captivating events in book one. I’d give it 4.4/5.

Excellent Book and Series

This is the second book in this series and was just as excellent as the first. The character development was thorough and detailed. The author does a wonderful job at creating the world his characters inhabit. The characters have depth and are more believable in their imperfections. There is another book in this series but it is very short. I have a concern that there is far too much happening to be wrapped up in one last (short) book. That is my only concern. I will be very disappointed if this series has a less than satisfactory (unfinished) ending.

A maraton with too many elaborate details

Pleasant narrative voice on an imposing story. It has its slow parts too but the overall performance is a great listen. Many chapters get dragged with too many elaborate descriptions which can be irritating and a time well wasted. However, I would very highly recommend both books of this saga and look forward to the next continuation.

Amazing, Absolutely Amazing...

The amount of depth in this series is amazing and not at all overwhelming. It took awhile to get to some action for my taste but when it does come it comes in a fury. The humor in this series is also noteworthy as is the humanity in it.

Nick Podehl does an incredible job after listening to him here I put many books he narrates in the wish list. When he does an accent it feels like it is entirely another person as it should be.

I’ll be reading/listening to this series for a long time and cannot wait for the third book!

Sitting. Watching, waiting for part 3.

As always Nick Podehl brings life to a great story. It will be interesting to see how it will shift gears in part 3.

Better than the first book.

I liked this second book even more than I liked the first one which was the best book I have ever read in my life. I didn't really see a tell at all which is what I call when a writer rewrites a scene slightly and puts it back into the book. I really didn't get the sense of insanity from the character like I did in the first one as he seemed to come to grips with it better though he seemed more suicidal toward the end for some reason. I liked the cliffhanger at the end as well and leaves me hopeful that the 3rd book will be even better than the first two. I did not see the purpose of Quoth's girlfriend Dena as she seemed little more to her than her looks and wit. I guess From my life at my age I do understand to a certain extent however its really kind of shallow. I imagine the purpose will be revealed in the third book. Anyways I like the book, it did not drag at all and I liked the university. Keep writing! I plan to read the 2.5 book but think I will go drift to the free books for awhile and drift back to it later. Thanks! I have read some books recently that seem to just stop almost randomly and then restart into another book. This book have a perfect finish and I was satisfied with both of them without the third
