Publisher's summary

Adam Griffey is living two lives. By day, he teaches literature. At night, he steals it. Adam is a plagiarist, an expert reader with an eye for great works. He prowls simulated worlds perusing virtual texts, looking for the next big thing. And when he finds it, he memorizes it page by page, line by line, word for word. And then he brings it back to his world, the real world, and he sells it. But what happens when these virtual worlds begin to seem more real than his own? What happens when the people within them mean more to him than flesh and blood? What happens when a living thing falls in love with someone who does not actually exist?

Layered dimensions.

Loved it. Enjoyed the multi-layers of worlds. The idea of stealing works from artificial worlds was especially clever. Would have liked more exploration of these worlds.

Loved this story!

I had no expectations since the author is new to me. I will be listening to more of his stories.
I liked the twist on the haiku and the timely topic.
I didn't mind the narrator but do enjoy a more natural delivery. It felt a bit over stressed to begin with but I got used to it quickly.
Overall a interesting, quick listen.

Good idea ruined by a trite ending

Nice treatment of a familiar trope right up to the overused ending.

The narration was acceptable but nothing special.

Entertaining and Amusing

An intersting twist on the multiverse and our anticipated ability to simulate reality in a supercomputer.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

interesting concept. Poorly executed.

How could the performance have been better?

More emotional. The whole story was read almost monotone.

Did The Plagiarist inspire you to do anything?

Look for better books

Incredible story concept, terrible narration

What did you like best about this story?

The concept behind the story itself was inventive and thought provoking.

Would you be willing to try another one of Alexander J. Masters’s performances?

I probably would give him a second chance. The other books narrated by him that I see currently on Audible don't appeal to me but he receives great ratings on those, unlike the reviews for "The Plagiarist". Perhaps he will look back on this book as his one gaucherie?

Any additional comments?

I absolutely LOVED the idea behind this story. I found myself wanting much more, maybe we'll see something expanding on this novella someday - I would definitely buy it if so. Hugh Howey has become one of my favorite authors, I picked this up after reading and listening to both Sand and the Silo Series; I'm glad I did.

A Good Story

Intelligently written, entertaining, and thought provoking story. I dropped a star because I could see the end from the middle. Not a deal breaker though, it was entertaining throughout, but a touch off from what I've come to expect from this author.

Where this really lacks is in the narration. A wholly unremarkable, monotone, and lifeless effort at storytelling. It's like giving an Olympic swimmer cement shoes and expecting great things. Personal preference I'm sure, and I stayed with it for the story, but had this been a full length novel I couldn't have tolerated it.

It's a short story, and well worth the read. I recommend you do just that, only in an e-book format.

Save yourself.

I started this short because it sounded interesting and the only reason I finished it is because I thought, "this has got to get better". Well it did not. The only reason it got two stars is because the premise was good.
