Publisher's summary

An epic novel of love, knowledge, jealousy, and hard choices.

Ayla, the independent heroine of the Earth's Children series, sets out from the valley on Whinney, the horse she tamed. With her is Jondalar, the tall, handsome, yellow-haired man she nursed back to health and came to love. Together they meet Mamutoi - the Mammoth Hunters - people like Ayla. But to Ayla, who was raised by the Clan of the Cave Bear, they are the "Others". She approaches them with a mixture of fear and curiosity.

It is the Mamutoi master carver of ivory - dark-skinned Ranec, flirtatious, artistic, magnetic - who Ayla finds herself drawn to the most. Because of her uncanny control over animals, her healing skills, and the magic firestone she discovers, Ayla is adopted into the Mammoth Hearth by Mamut, the ancient shaman of the Great Earth Mother.

Ayla finds herself torn between her strong feelings for Ranec and her powerful love for the wildly jealous and unsure Jondalar. It is not until after the great mammoth hunt, when Ayla's life is threatened, that a fateful decision is made.

Ayla finds a Family..

I first read about Ayla, while a teenager. Then in my thirties, now in my 60's. I still enjoy the series.. Still moves me with the different emotions, as I pass through the Journey. Kat Roman.

Always a pleasure...

I have read and re-read this series many times. I enjoy it and always find something that I missed before. The narrator/reader is really good; she changes her voices seamlessly between male and female and different characters of the same sex without confusing any of them. The story line is very well-written also. I like all the books. And, the sexy parts are not too risque. :-D

Fantastic, yet repetitive.

I will always adore the story of Ayla and Jondalar. I’d read this series many years ago, and was pleased to listen to the audiobook . Auel does a great job weaving together history and characters. I did find that her repetition of all the back-story became tedious. Somehow I didn’t notice it so much in the print version, but in the audiobook, without the luxury of skimming through stuff I already knew – well, it grew tiresome hearing over and over about what happened in the previous 2 books. I wish these novels weren’t intended as stand-alone sequels…I feel that detracts from the heart of the story. However, book three has plenty of storyline to make it worthwhile. I listened to the book at “fast” speed on my player, but I could tell the narrator did a good job.

Great story and presentation!

I learned so many interesting facts. I have read the first book in Jean Auel's Earth Children series and have found this second story just as riveting.

Wonderful addition to an already stellar series!

This continuation of the Earth's Children series was NOT a disappointment! The story line was strong and captivating while the narration was engaging and never dull. I look forward to the next installment!

Tears

How can one read with tears racing down one's face? Good thing I had Audible's version with Sandra Burr's narration to keep the story moving. And it was moving!

I think I liked this one the best so far. I wanted to thump Jondalar more often than not. Communicate, was the word I shouted to the book, communicate! But then I guess that would have left a very short book.

I have already ordered the Audible version of the next book and download the Kindle version. I have no idea why I had never read all these before. Jean M. Auel is quite the story teller! Oh, yeah, the books are all so heavy that my hands would have ached trying to read them.

Sandra Burr's narration was more flawless than in the previous books.

Well, I can hardly wait to get started on the next one.

Excellent again.

Love it again. Laughed and cried with Ayla as she comes to know and understand the others, and as she and Jondalar discover the truths about themselves and their love.
