Publisher's summary

Orson Scott Card’s The Lost Gate is the first book in the Mithermages series from the New York Times bestselling author of Ender’s Game.

Danny North knew from early childhood that his family was different—and that he was different from them. While his cousins were learning how to create the things that commoners called fairies, ghosts, golems, trolls, werewolves, and other such miracles that were the heritage of the North family, Danny worried that he would never show a talent, never form an outself.

He grew up in the rambling old house, filled with dozens of cousins and aunts and uncles, all ruled by his father. Their home was isolated in the mountains of western Virginia, far from town, far from schools, far from other people.

There are many secrets in the House, and many rules that Danny must follow. There is a secret library with only a few dozen books, and none of them in English—but Danny and his cousins are expected to become fluent in the language of the books. While Danny’s cousins are free to create magic whenever they like, they must never do it where outsiders might see.

Unfortunately, there are some secrets kept from Danny as well. And that will lead to disaster for the North family.

surprisingly good read

My nephew needed this book for class. I picked it up yesterday on a whim. I was hooked. I was surprised at the complexity for a young adult book. Great story! Well worth the listen.

Great concept story

Like all of his novels, this is very well written and a pleasure to read. Both narrators are good and a pleasure to listen to.

I hope Card continues with this series!

If you could sum up The Lost Gate in three words, what would they be?

an enjoyable listen

What other book might you compare The Lost Gate to and why?

The Hunger Games has a wild imagination and far out ideas but I think Card does it much better in this book!

What does Stefan Rudnicki and Emily Janice Card bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Makes it feel like your listening to someone make up a tale and you really get involved

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I wasn't able to but I surely would've if I could've

Any additional comments?

The use of gates can take the story anywhere and do anything...I'm looking forward to the next one in this series.

2nd Time and still amazing!

I am rereading this to refresh my memory for the Gatefather. I still found myself engulfed in the story and characters. A read well worth the credits.

A nice read

this was a nice treat but the story is slow and I think could be a lot more engaging. I didn't care enough for the characters or for the storyline to continue with other books in the series.
