Publisher's summary

In the second decade of the 21st century, the world is struck by two catastrophes: a new mini-ice age and a plague to dwarf all previous experiences. Rising out of the disaster is the character known to history as "Bandit Six", an American Army officer caught up in the struggle to rebuild the world and prevent the fall of his homeland - despite the best efforts of politicians, both elected and military.

The Last Centurion is a memoir of one possible future, a world that is a darkling mirror of our own. Written "blog-style", it pulls no punches in its descriptions of junk science, bad strategy, and organic farming.

Critic reviews

"Dan John Miller’s delivery is perfect for this no-punches-pulled first-person narrative by Bandit Six, the Last Centurion. Laced with crude language and dark images of the future, Miller’s reading is straightforward and army tough." (AudioFile Magazine)

"Ringo excels in the depiction of combat, managing to capture the carnage and horror while maintaining a sense of the absurd....with the unexpected twists that Ringo has made his hallmark." (Publishers Weekly)

Brilliant book about a pandemic in 2019 written in 2008

Reading a book in 2021 about a pandemic that happens in 2019 that was written in 2008 just blew me away! This book is exceptional when it comes to teaching you about everything from farming to military operations. Dan John Miller was the perfect narrator for the book.

A perfect book for the times.

Way to go John Ringo! It is amazing to know that this book was written in 2008. John nailed with great accuracy, much of what has happened over the last year. Of course there is quite a lot of this book that missed the mark but it is a well written story. If you are a right wing thinker, then listen to this book. If you are a "tofu eater" who wants to learn how the world really works, give this a try.

Very Good Except..

the obvious lecturing about the flu vaccine in his book which is the proxy for the covid jab. I like John Ringo for the most part and this book is no exception. However, one can clearly see his pro-covid vax stance. The "plague" in his book is light years away in comparison to the current virus.

just awesome

Still so now. This was written then and we are still living a version of now. Great performance. Loved the characters. Action plot and a character world that vibrate right off the page. Great fun read and listen.

I love Ringo's politics!

I listened to this almost in 1 sitting. Kept thinking about that senile old fart Biden and the disaster for America he has caused. If covid had been a bit worse this could have been a news report.

Excellent

This is a very well researched, very well thought out, and very well written book. Ok, it does drag at times...but the main character even acknowledges and apologizes for it and turns it into sort of a joke. Scary real stuff. Excellent book.

Great narrator, excellent story

This book was excellent. IT is more or less a diary of a soldier ten years into the future after a flu pandemic and the global aftermath. The breakdown of civilization in much of the world etc. I got it on a whim and had no idea what to expect. The narrator matched up perfectly with this interesting and unfortunately plausible vision of the future. The writer has a point of view to be sure, but I don't think it would get in the way of anyone's enjoying the book. I am going to check out more works by this author, previously unknown to me.

A Timely Tale Told in an Authentic Voice.

As you can tell from the publisher's description, this book falls into the category of science fiction/military thriller. Although I enjoy this genre, I am usually distracted from the story by the lack of authenticity in the military characters who seem to fulfill a publisher's sterotype of a soldier rather than thinkng, acting and talking like the ordinary men and women who provide extraordinary service to our military. John Ringo has definitely risen above the stereotype and created a very aunthetic protagonist and story line. Couple an excellent story with the narrator's excellent performance, and you have an audiobook that is definitely worth the credit.

An entertaining listen

Where does The Last Centurion rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This is, so far the best audiobook I've listened to.

Who was your favorite character and why?

The novel was about one mans experience, both in the military and during a hellish plague. So really, there's only one character to follow.

Have you listened to any of Dan John Miller’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Never heard his work before, it was okay, though there were some emphasis issues that that were a bit off.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

No, the whole book was great.
