Gabriel Garrett has faced many challenges.
The battlefields of Iraq and Afghanistan, the CIA, several years as a mercenary, and the end of the world among them. But now he faces a challenge none of his training, expertise, or combat experience have prepared him for - fatherhood.
With a new family and new responsibilities, Gabriel decides to leave Hollow Rock and start over in the growing city of Colorado Springs. It is here he believes he can finally leave behind the violence that has always followed him and begin a new chapter in his life. But to get there, he will have to cross the vastness of the American plains, and in a world where the dead walk the earth, no journey is ever easy.
When his caravan is ransacked, Gabriel, his stalwart friends Eric Riordan and Caleb Hicks, and his new family are forced to endure the dangers of the post-Outbreak world on their own. It is here they will face marauders, criminal organizations, corrupt government officials, starvation, and every other danger the wastelands can throw at them. To survive, they will have to rely on all their courage, resourcefulness, and will to fight.
And most importantly, they will have to rely on each other.

This series started out amazing. It had a lot of zombie fun. This part of the series is mostly marauders and maybe 15 minutes of zombies. I don't think I'll continue this series. In my opinion the Mountain Man series is better.
Awesome adventure of life on the road in a post apocalyptic world. This series keeps me on the edge of my seat always wanting more at the end. Why won't James Cook write faster? Thanks Mr Cook
I've read all of the books in this series and enjoyed them all! I enjoy the action and the way he develops the storyline which keeps me looking forward to reading more.
I've had this book in my library for a while and I finally worked my way to it. I was only disappointed I did not get to it sooner. I usually clean, cook, bake or do garden work when I listen to my audibles but it has to keep me interested and I do my best work when the narration is perfect. I got lots of work done it kept me glued to my headset... Gabe has just learned he is a father. His daughter Sabrina has just arrived and they appear to hit it off. I certainly hope that Mr. Cook has a back story for her because it would be interesting to know just how she acquired her fighting skills. He does so well in giving us a little mystery here and there with the characters and eventually the back stories, even the bad guys have a story. Wth the threat of the Alliance over, the military appears to have the ability to fight and win against large infected hordes and the occasional marauders. It is now much safer and prosperity has come to Hollow Rock. Gabe has just made a big decision; he is leaving to accept a job in Colorado Springs. He has always envied Eric and his family and now he has his own and decides it is time for a change. Although they do run into trouble on the way, it is nothing they can't handle. They arrive, all is well.....then Mr. Cook throws bombshell at us. The end of this latest adventure is the beginning of a new arc in the storyline and it involves Hicks who has evolved into one of the most interesting character in the series. It is a perfect ending to a new beginning.
Ultimate Character Badassery
I love them all! They are described so well and you feel you know them. I am a huge Eric, Gabe, Hicks fan, but each of the characters through the series are so well done that I can visualize exactly their expressions and demeanors. The relationships are honest and full of thought. This book actually made me tear up for a bit there.
Guy Williams is sooo good and perfect for this series! He is at top of my fave Narrator list. I am excited to listen to more works done by Mr. Williams just for the sake of hearing him some more. He nails the character seperation so well, it is easy to know who is speaking even if you only hear a gesture. Absolutely fantastic narrator!
Most definetly. This whole series was extreamly hard to put down. But this book in particular was one of the best. The flow was right, and it felt like Mr. Cook really took his time and did a fantastic job. I also love that the book has some length, and time was given to get into some depth. Again thanks to Mr. Cook for not hustling through it.
Extremely sad that this book ended, as well as leaving me chomping at the bit for the next release. Thank you Jim! Thank you Guy! Very very nice work!
some characters find an end to their story with others starting a new chapter I can't wait to read the next section of this series!!!
