Editorial reviews

Editors Select, June 2014 - All I knew going into M.R. Carey's The Girl with All the Gifts was that it is a zombie novel centered around a special, enigmatic little girl named Melanie. Now that I've finished, I have a dilemma — I want to convince everyone I know to listen to it, but I don't want to give a single thing away. What I will say is this: The Girl with All the Gifts is one of the most imaginative, original, and deeply human takes on the zombie genre I have ever encountered in any form. It's definitely a thriller in the true sense of the word: every time I thought I knew where the story was going, Carey completely changed the game, and there were plenty of those harrowing, suspenseful scenes that make the genre so irresistible. But what made this story truly unique were the characters — multidimensional, believable, and sympathetic personalities that stayed with me long after the story was over. If you like zombie fiction, or just great, smart thrillers, make this your next listen. And don't dare let anyone spoil the ending for you. Sam, Audible Editor

Publisher's summary

In the ruins of civilization, a young girl's kindness and capacity for love will either save humanity - or wipe it out in this USA Today best-selling thriller Joss Whedon calls "heartfelt, remorseless, and painfully human."

Melanie is a very special girl. Dr. Caldwell calls her "our little genius."

Every morning, Melanie waits in her cell to be collected for class. When they come for her, Sergeant keeps his gun pointed at her while two of his people strap her into the wheelchair. She thinks they don't like her. She jokes that she won't bite, but they don't laugh.

coming soon to theaters

great story! this is one of those tales that draws you in makes you love and hate the characters at the same time. This dark glimpse into how humans suffer a loss of morality as humanity itself teeters on the edge of existence blurring the lines between what's right, what's wrong and what's way.... wrong. With an ending that comes full circle, so satisfying!

Good story

The story was good and I really loved the performance, the British accent made it even more special to listen.

Fantastic action adventure with relatable characters

Even after reading so many zombie apocalypse novels, I was surprised and delighted by the backstory, characters and narrative. It felt like a movie, so I was unsurprised to find it is indeed coming out in September in film. The tightness of the story renders the plot points inevitable, as the author leads the reader past the gross out to the inexorable conclusion. Don't want to spoil it so will just say, read it before you see the movie. The characters deserve that. And the arguments on the sides of not science and humanity are worth exploring through the novel, not just 180 minutes onscreen. A fresh look at what biodiversity can mean.

This book has everything!

Any additional comments?

There is something so creepy about child-monsters. LOVE THIS BOOK! Great ending too. It could have been so sappy or lackluster or predictable. Listen to this one.

Intriguing as a short story, stunning as a book

Any additional comments?

In the anthology "Apple for the Creature", the short story by Mike Carey was one of the two that left me desperately wanting to know what happened next (the other one was by Ilona Andrews...because of course).

This book changes some of the elements present in that short story but ultimately I think the changes work and I have my answer (and probably trouble sleeping because there are some horrific parts to this story).

Melanie is an amazing character.

great unique take on what is an overdone topic

Great story with excellent character development. What makes this really stand out is the science behind the scenes and incredible ending.

Devoured this book like a Hungry

Loved this book, it was totally twisted but amazing nonetheless. The writing was believable, and for once in my life I loved the multiple povs.
