Publisher's summary

When it was first published over 20 years ago, Joe Haldeman's novel won the Hugo and Nebula awards and was chosen Best Novel in several countries. Today, it is hailed a classic of science fiction that foreshadowed many of the futuristic themes of the 1990s: bionics, sensory manipulation, and time distortion.

William Mandella is a soldier in Earth's elite brigade. As the war against the Taurans sends him from galaxy to galaxy, he learns to use protective body shells and sophisticated weapons. He adapts to the cultures and terrains of distant outposts. But with each month in space, years are passing on Earth. Where will he call home when (and if) the Forever War ends?

Narrator George Wilson's performance conveys all the imaginative technology and human drama of The Forever War. Set against a backdrop of vivid battle scenes, this absorbing work asks provocative questions about the very nature of war.

Satisfying Journey

An interesting story that begins slowly before suddenly gluing you into the protagonists journey. Its unfortunate it sputters in the third quarter but makes sure to deliver a satisfying end. A worthy read that is well worth the money and time.

Favorite Sci-Fi

I’ve read this several times, and enjoyed the audible version. One of my favorites. Like the relativity angle to the story.

one of the best sci-fi stories ever.

time travel, love, war, returning home and home no longer is the same. technical advances that are understandable. this was an amazing ride.

Out of 45 yrs reading sci fi THIS IS THE BEST

I feel overwhelmed with emotion after this unbelievably good first person HUMAN EXPERIENCE novel. It is a true classic! It IS epic!I actually wept a few times too! (from either sadness or joy). It was prophetically written in its day and carries an unpreachy anti war message everyone can appreciate. To me it felt like an ingenious mix of All Quiet On The Western Front, Starship Troopers, (with elements from the book and film) War of the Worlds (book) and kind of like Full Metal Jacket ? (only in space with a time travel love story added in! Ha.) Man I wish to God Kubrick would have made this into a movie series! (Perhaps he did that in a parallel world already..ha)

Unique individuals experience of Sci-fi war

Interesting take on a intergalactic war. I liked that it focused on how such a war would affect the individual. Though I don't agree with the authors predictions of future earth society (especially far-future, 500 years), I still think he wrote it well.

One of the best sci fi books ever written

It won all the rewards it did because the story is so good. It still holds up today and you should check it out.

Still as fresh as when it came out in the 70s

Just as good as I remember it from about 45 years ago. Loved it again!

Not much happened.

I listened to 60% of this and couldn't keep going. I hear the end is good, but not listening to a book just for the ending.
