Publisher's summary

When Shai is caught replacing the Moon Scepter with her nearly flawless forgery, she must bargain for her life. An assassin has left the Emperor Ashravan without consciousness, a circumstance concealed only by the death of his wife. If the emperor does not emerge after his hundred-day mourning period, the rule of the Heritage Faction will be forfeit and the empire will fall into chaos.

Shai is given an impossible task: to create—to Forge—a new soul for the emperor in less than one hundred days. But her soul-Forgery is considered an abomination by her captors. She is confined to a tiny, dirty chamber, guarded by a man who hates her, spied upon by politicians, and trapped behind a door sealed in her own blood. Shai's only possible ally is the emperor's most loyal counselor, Gaotona, who struggles to understand her true talent.

Time is running out for Shai. Forging, while deducing the motivations of her captors, she needs a perfect plan to escape...

Fantastic Peek into Sanderson's Universe

This is a small sample of the world-building and character development Sanderson is capable of.

loved the concept. the idea that a copy, no matter how accurate, is still not real. an idea I've been trying to figure out how to show myself.

I want more!

Wow. Brandon Sanderson blew me away again with his imagination! How I wish we have a sequel of this story or someone like her. Makes me want to learn Forgery too~

Short but amazing

Read this after Warbreaker which I read after Elantris which I read after finishing the Alloy of Law series which eventually came after Radiant Archives and Mistborn. It's amazing how these recurring themes don't seem repetitive and unoriginal but deep and complex. One truth in one book may only be slightly different or somewhat related to the same truth in another book. Think alternate dimensions. Except these dimensions can overlap.

I will probably get on to read Stealheart next in my Brandon Sanderson binge. For anyone doing something similar to me, then I highly recommend this book. It's short and leaves you wanting more info about Shai and her world but it's a fantastic book to listen to after all the other titles I mentioned. They say that this is a pre-quel to Elantris but I genuinely couldn't tell so don't worry, there's only a recommended order to these books but you won't get lost if you start somewhere different

Better than expected

These short books are usually a disappointment, but this kept my interest better than expected. It's an interesting premise, and a unique magic system. Not a bad listen!

A concise yet greatly explored fantasy concept.

The main character is my favorite Sanderson woman so far. You know her. She's whip smart but prefers to be underestimated. She's playing the long game with everyone she meets. This one just feels more genuine, ironically.
The reader is wonderful, putting more emotion into her reading than most while not over doing it or making it difficult to draw your own interpretations.

A major secret of human potential is hidden here!

The only thing I didn’t love was the narrator voice and are leading lady voice or identical was made sometimes hard to know which was speaking. Other than that I truly loved the story and the characters. I do believe that there is a secret hidden within the story of our human potential and how we can be anything we want. Our story is ours to write and rewrite as many times as we’d like.

Imaginative and enjoyable

Quite a refreshing tale that I really enjoyed. The plot unfolded on mystery and with each paragraph I questioned what was going to happen and what was real. The characters were developed and drew you into the tale. I enjoyed the narration and thought it only added to the telling of this excellent yarn.
