Publisher's summary

For countless millennia, the dwarves of the have defended the stone gateway into Girdlegard. Many and varied foes have hurled themselves against the portal and died attempting to breach it. No man or beast has ever succeeded. Until now...

Abandoned as a child, Tungdil the blacksmith labors contentedly in the land of Ionandar, the only dwarf in a kingdom of men. Although he does not want for friends, Tungdil is very much aware that he is alone - indeed, he has not so much as set eyes on another dwarf. But all that is about to change. Sent out into the world to deliver a message and reacquaint himself with his people, the young foundling finds himself thrust into a battle for which he has not been trained. Not only his own safety, but the life of every man, woman, and child in Girdlegard depends upon his ability to embrace his heritage. Although he has many unanswered questions, Tungdil is certain of one thing: No matter where he was raised, he is a true dwarf.

And no one has ever questioned the courage of the Dwarves.

adventure vs relaxing

I thought it was amazing. It was a little too deep for a relaxing read but perfect for an all-out adventure. I was a little confused with all the different characters and everything happening at the same time, but it was great

Orbits and cycles

Overall I enjoyed the story, even though it took me a long time to finish. It never really gripped me and made me feel like I just had to get back to it.

My biggest problem with the book was the author's choice to call days and years orbits and cycles instead of just sticking with days and years. Every time either word was used, it pulled me out of the story, and I had to try to figure out which unit of time was being referred to. Even now, I'm not sure which is which and could argue either way. It was an unnecessary choice, and the book would have been better without it.

Excellent.

A proper dwarven epic. Anyone that's ever enjoyed Gimli a bit too much will love this book. 😅

Great book well worth the listen

I read this book years ago and loved it. It was just as fun to listen to as ot was to read. My only complaint is the voices the narrator chose for a couple of the characters. They don't quite line up with what I had expected/ the voice I had assigned to the characters in my own reading were quite a bit different. That is not a fair complaint to level against them, and it was by no means a detractors, I would just love to know why they chose the voice they chose is all! I was able to get used to the new voices quickly and found it quite enjoyable!

story befitting a proper Dwarf

dwarves are a favorite race for me in fantasy, and this story scratches that itch properly.

Gimli's Lord of the Rings (and zombies)

This is a great big epic of a book and unusual in being from the dwarves' point of view. Dwarves haven't gotten enough love in my opinion so i was eager to read the book. The reader is good does voices well and is pleasant to listen to. The story however, is so-so. its a well crafted very rich story that suffers from hokey passages and unecessary characters. I understand the author's desire to make the dwarves shine but this is done at the cost of other peoples who are demeaned. Humans simply cannot fight off orcs, elves are proud and foolish... so that all these othercharacters are more like flat sterotypes than fully fleshed out characters like the dwarves. Its a silly idea but it almost reads like dwavish propaganda. Also a lot of the names are similar which makes the plot hard to follow at times, especially in audio format. It is a fun read for a fantasy fan though.
