Publisher's summary

A human diplomat creates an interstellar incident when he kills an alien diplomat in a most unusual way. To avoid war, Earth's government must find an equally unusual object: A type of sheep ("The Android's Dream"), used in the alien race's coronation ceremony.

To find the sheep, the government turns to Harry Creek, ex-cop, war hero and hacker extraordinaire, who with the help of Brian Javna, a childhood friend turned artificial intelligence, scours the earth looking for the rare creature. And they find it, in the unknowing form of Robin Baker, pet store owner, whose genes contain traces of the sheep DNA. But there are others with plans for the sheep as well: Mercenaries employed by the military. Adherents of a secret religion based on the writings of a 21st century science-fiction author. And alien races, eager to start a revolution on their home world and a war on Earth.

To keep our planet from being enslaved, Harry will have to pull off the greatest diplomatic coup in history, a grand gambit that will take him from the halls of power to the lava-strewn battlefields of alien worlds. There's only one chance to get it right, to save the life of Robin Baker - and to protect the future of humanity.

Critic reviews

"With plenty of alien gore to satisfy fans of military SF and inventive jabs at pretend patriotism and self-serving civil service, Scalzi delivers an effervescent but intelligent romp." ( Publishers Weekly)

A hilarious and exciting adventure

This is a very well thought out story with some amazing characters and humor. My only problem is with the narration. Will Wheaton's voice is amazing, but he only changes his tone for a couple characters. At times, I found it hard to distinguish who was speaking. I loved it overall!

Perfectly digestible and fun little distraction

Not Scalzi's best, but still a fun little romp. Overall I'm not upset to have spent the time, and it had all the hallmarks of a Scalzi book: good jokes, fast pacing, and engaging action scenes. And I liked that it was it's own standalone little story without a huge universe or massive time commitment.

world building absolutely fantastic

Really got emmersed in this world of casual human/"alien" reality. enjoyed the pace at which the story builds and hope for more stories set in this universe. Perhaps unrelated but acutley aware of each other.

Literary comfort food.

Simple, hilarious story that never slows down. The premis is carrying the story, being absurd enough to entertain but coherent enough to follow.
It's a good read when your mind can't be 100% on the story.

Where does The Android's Dream rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This was an entertaining story although you have to pay close attention to the names to keep them straight.

Cannot listen around anyone under 18!

I did not enjoy this book as much as others I have read by John Scalzi, the story line was a little too out there in my opinion, but it was entertaining. My biggest issue was the amount of swearing and mentions of sexual scenes that were really not necessary to use at all. I'm sure this will motivate some to buy the book. Sadly.
Cannot listen to this book at all around anyone younger than 18, or maybe seniors as well. I had to keep headphones on while listening to this.
