Publisher's Summary

Tarl Cabot has always believed himself to be a citizen of Earth. He has no inkling that his destiny is far greater than the small planet he has inhabited for the first 20-odd years of his life. One frosty winter night in the New England woods, he finds himself transported to the planet of Gor, also known as Counter-Earth, where everything is dramatically different from anything he has ever experienced. It emerges that Tarl is to be trained as a Tarnsman, one of the most honored positions in the rigid, caste-bound Gorean society. He is disciplined by the best teachers and warriors that Gor has to offer...but to what end?

This is the first book of John Norman's popular and controversial Gorean Saga, a series of novels the author began in 1967 with Tarnsman of Gor and are now considered cult classics. This audiobook is based on the definitive edition recently published by E-Books.

    Story
    "A good yarn But..."

When I first read the series ten years ago, it was quite disturbing in a chauvinistic in a sexual way. The story was good, and fun. the science must be taken with a the grain of salt, but that's ok its an adventure story not a text. These days with the heavy hitting S&M story's like Shades of Grey, John Norman has nothing of the shock value his tale had back in the day. The story ties aliens with abducted earthlings, medieval sword and arrow play into an entertaining series. If you are into online Role playing, whole lands are devoted to this series in Second life, so read it and live it as well if you desire. Enjoy!

The detail in which the story was written immerses you into the world of Gor. Powerful character development and underlying social themes we struggle with even today will keep the reader coming back for more.

    "Um, OK?"
Did the narration match the pace of the story?

The narration is good. However, it was hard to get into the book because I couldn't get into the story.

    Any additional comments?

It's a book about love (somewhat) and lots of "This is how men and women should behave towards each other." If you're into the master-slave relationship then this is the book for you. For me, not so much. I could have got over that, however, if there was more story to support the "this is how Lara (sp?) fell in love with Tol (sp?)" part but there is a lot of "quickening" through the story. i.e. at one minute in the reading the two people hate each other, the next minute of the story a day or month may go by and they're madly in love with each other because the main character is the uber-warrior. I prefer more in-depth reasons for why people want to be with each other.I've listened to the first two books and it was pretty transparent as to what was going to happen in the second book after listening to the first book.On a side note, I think the series could be quite good if there was more time dedicated to the adventure, the politics, and the emotional development between the main character and the main love interest of the book.

    Story
"Imaginative sci-fantasy rooted in the real world"
What did you like best about Tarnsman of Gor? What did you like least?

The opening book of the Gorean Saga gives a background of the protagonist and his father, which sets the reader up nicely for the rest of the series, but it seems a bit drawn out and, well, boring. This is a struggle that many opening books of epic series fight with and it is definitely not a reason to avoid the book. I liked the imagination of the connected alternate reality of Gor and it is easy to immerse myself vicariously through the protagonist.

Would you be willing to try another book from John Norman? Why or why not?

Yes, of course. Having invested the time to learn the Gorean characters I now feel obligated to read more of the stories...but I'm not complaining!

What does Ralph Lister bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I really liked the gruffness and authority behind the story that Lister brings. Most other narrators would not have pulled this difficult subject matter off as well.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

Please...don't. I shudder with visions of Conan the Destroyer.

    Any additional comments?

This series might be the missing link behind pop fiction and epic fantasy. It is better than the average grocery store rag but somehow it misses the intangibles belonging to the greats.

    "Escape to Gor!"

Having discovered this series back in the late 70's, I was delighted to see it listed on Audible.

As expected, I enjoyed it immensely, having lost none of its original appeal. In fact, listening to it now, I can???t help but wonder how much of today???s accepted Sci-Fi lore can be attributed to early works such as this.

A world where modern day weapons and technology are banned. Where men lived by a simpler and more honorable code. Flying mounts. Sound familiar? Well here is one of the originals and its hasn???t dated a bit.

My only minor criticism is the narrator, who does a good enough job with the reading itself, but I found he just didn???t have the type of voice I would have expected for the main character. As it is read in the first person, I found it took some time to become accustomed that the voice you were hearing was coming from a young, athletic Englishman, turned fierce warrior of Gor.

That aside, it???s an enjoyable listen and one that I highly recommend.

    "Narnia for adults"

I think of this as Narnia for adults without the religious undertones.

    The good
    A) the creativity of the planet and people and creatures is really impressive
    B) the story line keeps you guessing

    The not so good
    A) the narrator was hard to under stand at times...I do listen at 1.5 and have never had a problem before
    B) because the story has so many new ideas the listener may find themselves rewinding to listen again, this is because most names are very unusual both of people and animals

    "Enjoyable read"

I hadn't read the Tarnsman of Gor for about 40 years, so I was delighted to see it is now available for download. And I wasn't disappointed - the narration is excellent, and the story itself was as good as I remembered it. The book has a strong plot, lots of humour and is a fun listen! I'm off to download the next in the series.

"Tarnsman of Gor - Cor Chronicles vol. 1"

I am a big fan of the Gor series of books and was absolutely delighted when I found that Audible had released the first of the series. The narrator reads the book very well and clearly. I would recommend it to any fan of the Gor series. I have also noticed that vol. 2 (Outlaw of Gor) has also been released on here.

I read this book 20 years ago, and it sets up the series beautifully. Yes, some rampant sexism but all good fun. Certainly better than 50 shades of crap. The world of Gor is well realised and feasible, and the pacing and story kept me interested again. Well worth a listen.
