Publisher's summary

Recovering witch Garnet Lacey owns Wisconsin's premier occult bookstore. And a fringe benefit of the job is getting customers like Sebastian Von Traum - piercing brown eyes, a sexy accent, and a killer body. The only thing missing is an aura. Which means he's dead. And that means trouble - something Garnet's a sucker for....

Couldn’t even get through it

The main character just seem dumb and not well written... and the plot does make sense. Like she relocated because her coven got murder but has a new best friend in this new town and then when the people that murder her coven show up she decided to stick around to warn a guy that she just met and she sleeps within 13 hrs of meeting. It doesn’t make any sense.... I just couldn’t get in to it. Only positive note is that as always Amanda Ronconi is amazing.

Tall, Dark, Dead & Poorly Edited

This book has inspired me to write my first review. I have listened to 100s of book on audible and frequently let the reviews guide my purchase but have never been moved to review a book before. I bought this book because the storyline seemed like fun and the narrator, Ms. Ronconi, is my favorite narrator. She does an excellent job, as usual, giving each character their own unique voice. The story itself was sweet, funny, romantic and entertained me from start to finish. It reminded me very much of Molly Harper's novels, also narrated by Ms. Ronconi. At this point I will try to explain why this book only received a 2 star rating. The editing was awful. The first hour or two was seamless but after that everything went south. Phrases were overlapped on top of each other, spacing between words would lag way, way too long. Everything would be fine for a minute or two and then the issues would start again. I was able to decipher the sentence structure but it was unbelievably frustrating and very distracting. The errors were so noticeable that I believe nobody gave the final product even a cursory listen. If I were the author I would be very disappointed and embarrassed that this was the final result.
I have to admit though I enjoyed the story and narration enough that I plan on downloading at least the next book in the series.

A little to dark for my taste

I really like light hearted paranormal romance. I love anything Molly Harper. This is super dark not funny at all just dark. Not for me at all. Amanda ronconi is amazing as ever.

Forced and a little bit painful.

Amanda Ronconi does a great job as always. There was too much unnecessary descriptions to the point that it felt like it was just to lengthen the book.

I really wanted to like this series...

I'm a fan of paranormal stories and even paranormal romance stories, but I really just couldn't stand Garnet Lacey. She is a stupid, shallow woman who plots to get in a mans pants from the moment she sees him, sleeps with him immediately and decides the man is her "boyfriend" after a single night together. The whole thing screams "Hello I'm desperate and stupid" and I just need a far better story line in order to keep my interest. I've wasted my time on three of these books since they were recommended to my due to my "taste preferences" and I don't think I'll be trying any more of them.

No moral compass

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

I was expecting a humorous PNR similar to Molly Harper. Instead of charming and funny, this story has an underlying meanness due to a lack of moral compass. I'm ok with sex and magic, but when I see references to "goddess of light" I also expect to see "an it harm none." This protagonist doesn't much care about harm or the consequences of her actions, as well as being TSTL. The combination is not entertaining. The 2 male leads are supposed to be charming, but one comes off as a sociopath and the other has a will of limp spaghetti and no compassion. There are no characters I feel any respect or liking for.

The narration was good. There were about 3 spots of very bad technical quality right after the beginning of the second half.

Would you ever listen to anything by Tate Hallaway again?

No.

What about Amanda Ronconi’s performance did you like?

Nice job. Good characterization, attractive accents.

What character would you cut from Tall, Dark, and Dead?

Did not like any of them. They have no heart.

The best thing about the book was the narrator--love Amanda Ronconi. There were the technical glitches. Don't think I am going to try the next book by TH.

Narrator was the only good part

The narrator was great as usual, but I found the book almost boring and plotless - I finished it, but only barely. A very forgetable read, I won't be getting the others in the series.
