Publisher's summary

The United States of America reigns over Earth as the last surviving superpower. To build a society free of American influence, foreign countries have inhabited the moon, taking advantage of the natural resources to earn their own riches. Now, the U.S. military has been ordered to wrest control of Earth's satellite from their rivals. Sergeant Ethan Stark must train his squadron to fight in an airless atmosphere at one-sixth normal gravity against a desperate enemy. Ensuring his team's survival means choosing between which orders to obey - and which to ignore.

A cautionary tall for today

I have listen to many John G Henry stories and in all there is a thread of truth which connects the story in space to today and the challenges we face. In all, places where humans are forced to confront the behavior that has become the norm and grow into more complete, compelling and desirable people. This story is different. In listening to it, I felt a shiver of what could be if we as a people are not careful to care for our democracy, our military and the relationship between the people and the government.

Very whiney, interesting take on future history

Other reviewers have mentioned that there's a lot of whining, and oh boy, there is. That's the drawback. It's also sort of one-dimensional on the characters. At one point, Stark says he's a "have a beer, then have another beer" kind of guy when talking about the kind of women he would date, but that's not really how his character comes across, maybe because of how the narrator voices him (very bass and commanding). Stuff I enjoyed: some good humor, interesting take on how the future could play out if technology allows officers to ride shotgun and interact with any soldier during a battle.

Rollicking Sci-Fi

Where does Stark's War rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

It is difficult to rank Stark's War against the Other Jack Cambell Books I've read, but it is among my favorite.

What did you like best about this story?

The quick pace, humor, excellent story telling and plot with believable characters and situations.

Which scene was your favorite?

That is a toss up between when when Stark covered the retreat of the Platoon and the confrontation between Sgt. Reynolds and Stark after he "fragged," their captain.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I laughed a lot and Jack Campbell, also caused me to think while I was laughing about the possibility of this becoming reality and not fiction.

Any additional comments?

The narrator was excellent with a variety of voices that stayed consistent. hHe brought the story to life with good delivery and timing.

I tell everyone I can to read it. you can believe that its happening its not to far fetch. great syfi with out going over the top like some books that you are like really sure. he follows the rule of the rule that he sets. the tactics in the books are fun and smart.

Not a bad first novel!

I can see why he has blossomed into a great author.

In the book I only struggle with the fact that one major alternative isn't even discussed. That is hard to believe; I would have enjoyed seeing them hash out that choice. Otherwise, it is a fun read and a great "what if" warning.

An Jr High School Student could have done better

What would have made Stark's War better?

Less complaining. It us clear that Jack Campbell was using this book to complain about his perceived state of the US Military and government, but it was a ham handed effort.

I have read his Lost Fleet Series and no where did the first Stark book come up to that standard. I just regret that I had purchased the second in the series at the time. Too bad Audible doesn't have a money back policy of some sort when a book disappoints to this extent.

Has Stark's War turned you off from other books in this genre?

No

Have you listened to any of Eric Summerer’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Poorly

What character would you cut from Stark's War?

All of them.

Do Not Buy

At the beginning of this book the author says that it was his first one. I can easily believe that. I am only an hour into it and am considering just kissing my money good bye.

Disappointed

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

There was too much separation between the enlisted and officers. The author did not sell me on the fact decisions were made on made up numbers. A good author would have developed the story line the was remotely believable.

Has Stark's War turned you off from other books in this genre?

No

Would you listen to another book narrated by Eric Summerer?

Yes

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Stark's War?

The briefing
