Here is a special edition 20th anniversary release of the #1 New York Times bestselling novel that reignited the entire Star Wars publishing phenomenon—unabridged for the first time. The biggest event in the history of Star Wars books, Heir to the Empire follows the adventures of Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, and Princess Leia after they led the Rebel Alliance to victory in Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi.
Five years after the Death Star was destroyed and Darth Vader and the Emperor were defeated, the galaxy is struggling to heal the wounds of war, Princess Leia and Han Solo are married and expecting twins, and Luke Skywalker has become the first in a long-awaited line of new Jedi Knights.
But thousands of light-years away, the last of the Emperor’s warlords - the brilliant and deadly Grand Admiral Thrawn - has taken command of the shattered Imperial fleet, readied it for war, and pointed it at the fragile heart of the New Republic. For this dark warrior has made two vital discoveries that could destroy everything the courageous men and women of the Rebel Alliance fought so hard to create.
The explosive confrontation that results is a towering epic of action, invention, mystery, and spectacle on a galactic scale - in short, a story worthy of the name Star Wars.

Twenty years ago, Zahn jump starting of the expanded, post ROTJ Star Wars with an epic trilogy that remains a standard by which all later Star Wars books were judged. Seeing this special edition unabridged recording inspired me to revisit this title to see how well it held up. For the most part, it has aged well. Zahn offering a compelling and swift moving narrative giving us a look at life in that galaxy far far away after the Rebellion's victory.
Most important of all, though, is the unabridged redition of the complete story. To many Star Wars novels suffer from their abridgement into audiobook form. This gives the full experience and I hope that we will get to have the other two books of this trilogy in unabridged form soon as well.
Marc Thompson is an excellent narrator that makes the characters sound almost like the original actors from the movies. I had to laugh though, Tallon Karrde sounds a little like Antonio Banderas. This is the first Unabridged Star Wars book I have gotten, and both my wife and myself are eagerly awaiting Dark Force Rising and The Last Command to come out unabridged by the same narrator!
Timothy Zahn wrote a very good series and Marc Thompson really brings it alive. You want some great entertainent? Get this audiobook.
I read this book 20 years ago and wasn't overly impressed but was glad to see the Star Wars Expanded Universe genre kick off regardless. Now 20 years later after having listened to this audio version I have to reprise my opinion on this. I really enjoyed listening to the book and I have to say that this was an excellent production which is probably why I enjoyed it better this time around. Props to Marc Thompson who has the voices of the male characters down to a freakin T!
As a kid I liked the movies, but after reading this book in 1992 my love of Star Wars began. Thank You Timothy Zahn. Marc Thompson performance is great as always. I sure hope they revisit the other two in this series soon!
Awesome book, just like going to the movie without the lack of story thanks to it being unabridged. My only complaint is that i have no idea if i will ever get to hear the rest of the series. Looks like it depends on sales of the first book before they even decide to procede. That bothers me, i wont waste my money on the abridged books and now im waiting in limbo. BE BOLD! Commit with eta dates and then you Will get the sales on the first book. This way is backwards and makes no sense. If I realized the other 2 books of the series might not come to audible before i downloaded it i may have not bought it in the first place. Dam executive corporate logic doing things wrong and backwards like always.
Marc Thompson is truly an amazing narrator. Unabridged star war books sound so much better. With Abridge versions I feel the narration is rushed and forceful, but unabridged versions really make the story come to life and with Marc narrating, you know the characters will be spot on. I never read the Thrawn Trilogy, but I could immediately get into the plot, and there's enough suspense and action in this one to keep you glued to it till the end. I hope they do remake the others so I can finish the series. Definitely recommend it!
Please keep making unabridged versions with Marc Thompson and I will continue to buy them!
I enjoyed Zahn's Thrawn books immensely - this should be the canon - it's far superior to the Episodes 1 - 3 in it's imagination and scope.
Please bring out the rest of this series in unabridged format - I will buy them all, but I will not buy the currently offered abridged versions.
Like others, at first the ambient noises were a little jarring but after the first half hour I got used to them and they really aided in the story telling.
The only problem is that i am disappointed that the other two books in the series are not available at the moment.
Love the book & the narration is top notch but all the back ground noise and music takes away from the telling of the story. Really hope that they put out the other 2 books of the trilogy unabridged!
This book is easy to recommend to Star Wars and Sci-Fi fans. The production value is through the roof. Actual sound effects from the movies/series are utilized. Marc Thompson does an excellent impression of most of the voices of the actual actors from the movies.
Grand Admiral Thrawn. He evokes George Sander's Shere Khan from the Jungle Book with his civility and urbane wit. An excellent performance of a controlled master tactician.
The only reason I rated this a 4 overall is that some of the background effects are a little too distracting during certain segments of the story, including the sound effect for the start of each new chapter. I would only deduct half of a star if possible. The overall performance is spectacular. I hope that Random House and Marc Thompson are working on the 2nd and 3rd books in the series as well.
