And death is only the beginning....

The Purge's half-dozen survivors - two teenage brothers, a sadistic captain of the guards, a couple of rogue smugglers, and the chief medical officer, the lone woman on board - will do whatever it takes to stay alive. But nothing can prepare them for what lies waiting aboard the Star Destroyer amid its vast creaking emptiness that isn't really empty at all. For the dead are rising: soulless, unstoppable, and unspeakably hungry.

    "Awesome atmospheric Star Wars horror"

The Star Wars universe has always been about adventure and might, but being a full grown adult and a fan, I am always in search for good stories in the Expanded Universe.

I had always thought my beloved franchise needed some good mature stories and here it is. Death Troopers is a mature, fast paced story that will make you enjoy this book in one sitting.

The story is heavy on character development and you end up actually caring for what happens to all of them.

Narrative is pretty atmospheric and you feel like you are there, trying to get out of a swarm of monsters that are up for a good lunch.

Now about the narrator. This guy is AWESOME. I am pretty impressed by his quality, his acting skills and how he can switch from a teenage voice to a droid to a girl to a villain. All in a single chapter. If you happen to know him, please tell him I am a huge fan.

The production is also top notch. I has plenty of sounds and atmospheres and clips from the movies.

The book is a blast. Just plain fun and it will give you the creeps rather often.

    Fantastic work.

"It's a great read! A couple of issues..."
If you could sum up Star Wars in three words, what would they be?

    Terrifying, compelling, tragic

Who was your favorite character and why?

    Han.... obviously.

What does Sean Kenin bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Not a lot if i'm honest. Mostly the only thing you experience that you wouldn't if you read it is the sound effects. The Zombie screams, their munching on human and alien flesh.. very thrilling.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No, BUT not for the reason you may think. I find it very difficult to read/listen to horror thriller books in one sitting. It's a personal thing.

    Any additional comments?

This book is what it says it is; a thrilling tail of folks on a prison ship that go onto a derelict Star Destroyer and find zombles.

Now, that said, it doesn't mean it's that great of a book in general. But what it does mean is that it's a good book. the reason i've read for people disliking this book was 1) The reason behind the zombie apocalypse, to which i say: Its damn sight better then medichlorians . 2) the story was uneven and I will give them that. It is uneven at certain parts.

There was this guy in Canada (you can find his review somewhere below) that said he didn't like the background noise..... a couple things with that (i will resort to the number system again.) 1) Star Wars books have sound affects, it's their staple. 2) In this kind of a book it makes it even more frightening. I'm sure that if i read this i wouldn't find it in the least bit scary without the zombie screams getting loader and loader, yet never overpowering the narrator.

Stormtrooper zombies are awesome, in fact this book reminded me of Dead Space and that is a great game series (Excluding 3). It's horrifying, it's thrilling, it's gory, and it has zombies/necromorphs.

(SPOILER.) For those who have listened to the book may i just say my personal most scary moment was the Imperial officers in the shuttle. Surrounded by these ravenous, hunger filled monsters, they surrender their humanity and turn into zombies themselves. Just... *shiver*.

    "Couldn't put it down"

Luckily its not very long because I just couldn't stop listening. Kept my interest up throughout and I just can't complain about anything in the book. It has thematic star wars sound effects including ship background ambiance sounds and blasters, not to mention wookie growls. Yes, Chewie is there with Han Solo too! Just amazing really and the narrator does an excellent job.

I am not even a Star Wars fan, and this would be my first book I've ever read or listened to about Star Wars. I got interested in it because of the zombies. The combination is really cool, but neither Star Wars nor Zombies get in the way of telling this scary and unique story. I thought the Star Wars setting would distract from the story, but it didn't t all. This book is about a scary infection that turned people into zombies. It just happened to do it in space, and that space was the Star Wars universe. While its not like any other zombie story I've read, it is creepy, gory, thrilling, bloody and everything like that.

"Don't breath, or you'll become one too!"

This story is not just read - it sucks you in & tries to eat you alive! Not your standard "use the force, Luke" story. Not for the faint of heart. This tale is told in such detail, that you almost feel yourself coming down with something. If you like a great story painted in its most graphic & gory detail, then download this bad-boy, and you'll find out that there is no adventure Han Solo & Chewbaca can't survive - barely.

    "Freaking scary!"

Man this book will ENTRANCE you with the horror. At several points I had to stop because it was freaking me out. The chapter transitions which are screamed in a freaky way will really add to freaking you out. And yes thus far I've used the word freak a lot, because this book did a very good job of scaring the bejesus out of me. I had to stop listening to it after hours at work, cuz I was all alone. The narration is AWESOME. They have full dramatization and a full cast as far as I can tell. WARNING: This audio book WILL scare most people. I am no shyster to horror, with all classic horror movies being enjoyable to me. But jeez, the way this book is paced you constantly feel the constraints of the spaceships. There is nowhere safe to run. Nowhere to safe to hide. If horror is your bag, GET THIS AUDIO BOOK! If you are easily frightened stay away!

    "Great Book"

I thought this was a good book, and a good combination of two of my favorite sci fi things; star wars and zombies. One thing to note is that it is incredibly gory, just a fair warning. The narration is great, as are the sound effects.

    "Star Wars vs Dead Space"

Death Troopers is an odd addition to the Star Wars library. The story takes place far away from the original saga and avoiding the force all together. Instead it focuses on survival horror. If you're a fan of Star Wars and Dead Space you will enjoy Death Troopers.

Although the ending was weaker than the beginning the narration and ambient sounds are top notch. Death Troopers pleases listeners who are more into a tense listening experience than expanding their facts about the Star Wars universe.

    "FINE BOOK"

I really enjoyed this book. Right on time for Halloween. The book was really good and the story was not just your typical zomie story. The action was good and the characters. I was very very glad to see two old characters appear in the book before there was a New Hope. We need to know more about these characters before Star Wars. I will never get tried of Star Wars and look forward to 2010 books. Every book cannot be a hit. There will be some we like and some we do not like but, for the most part I like most of the book star wars have release. I have been with star wars since the first movie and I have the games also to keep up with the story. This is my soap opera.

    "Star Wars with zombies"

Atmospheric, dark and descriptive this is one of the best things to happen to the Star Wars expanded universe.
The writing of Joe Schreiber with narration from Sean Kenin combined with some immersive sound effects will have you visualising every gruesome moment in this tale.

It's proven so popular that a sequel is already being written.

What did you like most about Star Wars?

I was unsure before downloading this whether i would enjoy it or not, i don't read much in the way of plot lines as i don't want to spoil the story.
It got off to a good enough start building up the story and characters and just got better and better and the fact that part way through you knew that only two people had to survive for obvious reasons.
Loved it, will be looking at the prequel.

What did you like best about this story?

    not knowing the end

Which scene did you most enjoy?

    The chases

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Over a period of time traveling to and from work and at break times

    "Fanboy's dream?"

Star Wars and Zombies--the fanboy's ultimate delight--one of those left-field suggestions that when you hear it you instantly say YES! WHY DIDN'T ANYONE THINK OF THIS EARLIER?

While Schreiber may have written the book, he openly acknowledges that staff at Del Rey books (as well as one of their brother-in-law's) planted the seed and wrote the first outline, and that Schreiber himself was left to put pen to paper (or finger to keyboard.)

Thusly, Death Troopers starts out with a solid IDEA: a Zombie outbreak in the Star Wars universe. The first half of the story begins well enough, with the intrigue of a ghost ship yarn (albeit, the ghost ship in question is an imperial star destroyer), before moving through to the chaos of outbreak and infection at breakneck speed. This, unfortunately, is where Schreiber has apparently run out of steam, for the second half of the novel is mainly spent running from the living dead, just trying to find a way to escape, padding out the material as best possible.

It lacks something that's kind of hard to pinpoint, but it seems that you've just heard it all before--I myself found it very similar to the Alien movies--particularly the poor fourth entry. Once the setup is complete our heroes and villains are mainly left wandering dark cramped corridors, running from death snapping (quite literally at points) at their heels. There's no real pay-off, and the predictable stock/cliched subplots, including bio-weapon engineering and vengeance for the death of a father, are really quite uninteresting.

Its real selling point is its premise, which does fall short--however there are some positives: The first half is taut and vivid, and the welcome additions of some well-loved classic characters are well observed and true to character.

More PLOT would have been welcome, as opposed to SETUP, which Schreiber seems to have confused for storytelling. I was quite let down by this--even as an avid SW and ZOMFIC fanboy. Shame, really

    "Zombies In Space"

This is a superb addition to the Star Wars universe, blending horror with sci-fi. It tells the tale of an Imperial Prison Barge that stumbles upon a seemingly deserted Star Destroyer. All is not as it seems, and the boarding party gets infected with a virus that kills them, and then brings them back as the Undead.
Joe Schreiber does a fine job of incorporating zombie lore into his narrative. The narration is superb, and there are just enough sound effects (e.g. blaster shots, the whooshing of doors, the enraged cries of the undead etc.) to add to the atmosphere without becoming distracting (as I originally thought it would when I first started listening to this audiobook). Schreiber creates some marvellous action set pieces, and is not afraid to kill off some of the main characters, creating a genuine sense of tension - the only two characters you can be certain won't become zombie food are the two guest stars from the Star Wars movies - I don't want to spoil the surprise, so I won't name them here.
I happily rate this audiobook as 5 stars, and would recommend it to anyone. Listen and enjoy!
