Critic reviews

  • Audie Award Nominee - Judges' Award for Best Paranormal Audiobook, 2011

"A new, strongly unique voice in the dark fantasy genre." (Kim Harrison)

"Hunter's very professionally executed, tasty blend of dark fantasy, mystery, and romance should please fans of all three genres." ( Booklist)
"Khristine Hvam portrays Jane with an adventurous-sounding voice edged with a twang.... Hvam’s voices for the Louisiana locals whom Jane learns to love and respect.... augment an intriguing story with hints of Native American mysticism." ( AudioFile)

great story!

I really am enjoying this series. It's a great easy listen, that still keeps the listener pulled in. .The only small criticism I can offer is that the nods to Louisiana culture are a bit off. We do not boil crawfish in beer! The pronunciation of certain words scream that the narrator didn't do her research. They are pronounced "Pon-cha- train" Pontchartrain, "BOO-deh" Boudin.

The skinwalker angle is somewhat unique.

Entertaining enough to finish but just. I don't think I will be continuing on with the series.

The story was fun but the errors were many

The misuse of words in context by the author and the mispronunciation of words by the narrator were common stumbles in an otherwise very entertaining story. I’m hoping that this is due to this one being the beginning of a series and that with the next or subsequent books, the trip ups will reduce. It was definitely entertaining enough to ignore the gaffes and start the next book.

Original with good character development!

Jane (and beast) is a badass but could be a better detective. Overall I enjoyed it and the characters.

Nice reading not very well written

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

The reading was well done I have to say and the story itself is a well thought out idea but poorly executed. The parts where the author writes in the mind of the "beast" almost border on the absurd.

What was most disappointing about Faith Hunter’s story?

The writing as the beast really was very lacking and even the character of beast was poorly developed and never explored well.

Which character – as performed by Khristine Hvam – was your favorite?

She performed all the characters quite well and I particularly love the character of Tom.

Do you think Skinwalker needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

No.

Have Stake will Travel

That is Jane Yellow rocks business slogan. Cool isn't it. Jane hunts evil vampires ( seems like an oxymoron doesn't it) It this reality even the vampires have been regulated. Non law abiding Vampires are hunted down and killed.. That is Jane's job and she is very good at it. There are great characters here with their own sense of morality and Jane carefully plots her way between them often risking her life for a just cause. The interesting part is that sometimes she hunts these rogues down as either a human or a mountain lion. The pace is fast and exciting with tons of sword play, indian legends and motorcycle riding. It is very entertaining!

Did not work for me

Is there anything you would change about this book?

I don't like books that spend a lot of time describing the world of the story. For me, this book had too much telling and not enough showing. After the first scene, there was just too much tedium describing the world.

An okay shot at urban fantasy.

The action is kind of messy, your never sure where stuff is in a fight. The dialog is okay, but often send strange, maybe I'm just not connecting with the characters?
