Critic reviews

  • Audie Award Nominee - Judges' Award for Best Paranormal Audiobook, 2011

"A new, strongly unique voice in the dark fantasy genre." (Kim Harrison)

"Hunter's very professionally executed, tasty blend of dark fantasy, mystery, and romance should please fans of all three genres." ( Booklist)
"Khristine Hvam portrays Jane with an adventurous-sounding voice edged with a twang.... Hvam’s voices for the Louisiana locals whom Jane learns to love and respect.... augment an intriguing story with hints of Native American mysticism." ( AudioFile)

Worth the listen

Any additional comments?

I normally only listen to romance, paranormal romance mostly, but I enjoyed the story. It was very well written and had plenty of excitement. I liked the way when she was in cat form it actually talked how you would think a cat would think/talk if they could.

There is potential for romance but even without it I recommend it. It's definitely different. I plan on picking up the next one. Glad it was on the daily deal or I would have missed this story.

Putting aside my lack of the vamp story fondness; “Good!”

I would agree with others that the main character is obsessed with a large cat character, but we do find out why.
Interesting premise, I would like to see more about factors when changing to other sizes.
Looks like the start of something good

Good story but the narrator needs French lessons

Nice story line and a series I would like to continue. However, I am from Louisiana and the mispronunciations of people's names and the places I am familiar with was jarring and annoying. I hope this gets better with the rest of the series.

Love this book!

I've been looking for a new urban fantasy series to start and this one goes above and beyond! The story is captivating and exciting. The internal power struggle between Jane and her beast is representative of the power struggle in us all. I find it interesting that while most of the time Beast is the ID in the relationship and Jane is the SuperEgo that at times Beast is the one that can assess the situation and make choices not based on her own survival and desires. This is a very well rounded story that is well told and the narrator was fantastic and portraying the emotions and accents of all the players! 10/10!! I'm super excited to start the next book!

SKIN IN A GOOD LISTEN

I first discovered the author FAITH HUNTER listening to a 5 hour novella JUNKYARD CATS [which I highly recommend].She has a number of shorter stories ,some priced as little as 69 cents on Audible .Skinwalker is the 1st in the Jane Yellowrock series and I loved it.As you know there are 100s of vampire & zombie books/series. Skinwalker. has plenty of action but the "story behind the story" enhances the character development and enjoyment of the book.Personally I enjoy the details as much as the action.
This is a story in modern times which shows when Vampires and Witches [not the broomstick variety] come out of the closet living among humans following certain agreed on rules that allow and regulate things so that this may happen. Of course like in a totally human world not everyone follows the rules and greed, corruption ,temptation and politics are all a part of the world we live in. Jane Yellow Rock is a bounty hunter who is for hire for anything but specializes in hunting down the "bad" vampires which are as plentiful as bad humans. Interestingly she is hired by the New Orleans Vampire clans to help with some major internal vampire problems. This you find out almost immediately in the 1st chapter. Enjoy but you must pay attention. There are a lot of interesting characters.

Great read

What did you love best about Skinwalker?

I loved the main character. She kicked butt and was not a damsel in distress. She was quite capable of saving herself and others.

What did you like best about this story?

I enjoyed the mixture of paranormal characters. The author mixed things up.

Which scene was your favorite?

I enjoyed the last scene when she was confronted about killing the head vamps son. He really needs to let it go. That was not his son!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No

Any additional comments?

I will be getting the other books in this series!!!

Strong Heroine - Interesting Supernatural Twist

Any additional comments?

I found the heroine and her backstory to be interesting and fun. She's a kick-ass character -- sort of a Cherokee Lara Croft with touches of Kinsey Milhone. And the idea of sharing her body with The Beast makes her even more interesting.

The book was too long -- it really needed some editing. There were too many confrontations with the Rogue -- over and over -- I kept feeling like the next confrontation needed to be the final one. But it wasn't. Over and over. Also I was bothered by the author reminding us numerous times about characters. They were essentially reintroduced a number of times as though we might forget them.

There were brief hints of possible romances. I'm interested to find out how this progresses as we move to later books.

The narrator did a terrific job. Her southern accents were great and her take on The Beast was spot-on.

A Great Series - Different and Surprising

Any additional comments?

I was reluctant to purchase these books from reading the summary. It really sounded rather silly but when they went on sale for $6.95 I thought I would give it a try. What a pleasant surprise! The story is engrossing and different from the millions of others out there in this genre. It kept me so envolved I bought the whole series and can't wait for the next one to come out. The story is believable (for a fantasy!) and tracks very well. I love the characters and Brusier is my favorite. Team Bruiser all the way. If you enjoy action/fantasy with a little bit of sex, you will love this series. I will listen again and again!
