Critic reviews

  • Audie Award Nominee - Judges' Award for Best Paranormal Audiobook, 2011

"A new, strongly unique voice in the dark fantasy genre." (Kim Harrison)

"Hunter's very professionally executed, tasty blend of dark fantasy, mystery, and romance should please fans of all three genres." ( Booklist)
"Khristine Hvam portrays Jane with an adventurous-sounding voice edged with a twang.... Hvam’s voices for the Louisiana locals whom Jane learns to love and respect.... augment an intriguing story with hints of Native American mysticism." ( AudioFile)

Book was listed under ROMANCE, but there was none to be seen. Story was interesting if a bit muddled here n there.

Story was alright, but...

This story was good. It has a little bit of a different take on things with the heroine being a Cherokee woman. But I found it a little hard to visualize her as a strong independent woman and hunter when the narrator gives her the lilt of a sweet southern belle. Likewise the choppiness of her speech when she is in her mountain cat form is very distracting and off-putting I haven't decided if I will continue with the rest of the books in this series because all of the summaries sound so similar to the first book.

What about Khristine Hvam’s performance did you like?

Yes very much so she brings the charactors to life easliy

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

It took to sittings to listen to it intirely but i enjoyed it very much

Any additional comments?

Ive listened to all five books but wont be listing to any more as i think Jan yellowrock has become a bit of a harlot , thats a nice way of putting it

Jane Yellowrock and Her World Established

This book is an interesting variation from the normal vampire/werewolf story. It's about a woman of Cherokee descent who is a shape-shifter and works as a vampire slayer. The setting of this is present day New Orleans, Louisiana which gives it an aura of a fragrant Gothic atmosphere. This story was told in first person by the main character, Jane Yellowrock.

This book is the first of a series and introduces the setting and the main characters. I enjoyed reading this book, for the most part. I appreciated the style of the writer and the new world she has created. I'm looking forward to reading the other books in the series. I read this book as an audiobook: the narrator, Khristine Hvam, did a good job and had the right voice for the character.

Pronunciation of French names is horrible.

I started reading this book and was enjoying it so I went ahead and bought the next one and audible for both. Big mistake. I found myself shouting at the audiobook when a French name was spoken. Atrocious pronunciation. I’ll continue the series in Kindle, but won’t buy the audio for anymore of this series.

Overall, okay

Would you try another book from Faith Hunter and/or Khristine Hvam?

It is an okay book on a long drive. I was a little put off by the non-sexy sex parts. (Looking askance, admiring the way a man looks or is looking at the main character...)

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

less steamy looks, more character development

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

no

Pretty Good!

I enjoyed the story overall, though more Jane, than beast. I dont think it was necessary for Beast to talk the way she did, I really think it distracts from the story. I kept finding myself thinking of, or doing something else. The story just couldn't hold my attention while Beast was talking. It would have been better if the authot told us that Beast talked in pictures, scents, and basic feelings. Still liked the story very much though. As for the narrator, she does an excellant job with everything except the southern accents. Sometimes Jane had an accent, and sometimes she didn't,. Regardless it wasn't a North Carolina accent, especially an Appalachian accent, and her New Orleans accents weren't even close. I figure if you don't know the accent, you just shouldn't even try, even if the narrator was raised somewhere in the South and truly does have a Southern accent, then she should have just stuck with her own, and had character voices using her accent, after all she really has a very nice voicel
